South Korean shooter Kim Mi-jin set a world record to win gold in the women’s double trap event at the Asian Games on home soil on Thursday, raising the country’s gold tally in shooting to seven.

Kim, 34, shot 110 points for gold, edging out China’s Zhang Yafei by two points at Gyeonggido Shooting Range in Hwaseong, just south of Seoul. Bai Yiting, also from China, scored 107 points for bronze.

The victory also made her the world record holder in this discipline, as this year’s Asiad competition was the first event that meets conditions set by the International Shooting Sport Federation. After adopting new rules in 2013, the ISFF has been waiting for a competition that fulfills its requirement of having more than 15 athletes from at least five countries participating.

The competition at the Incheon Asian Games brought 19 shooters from six countries.

Kim also contributed to the team silver in this event with Son Hye-kyoung and Lee Bo-na. The squad combined for 314 points for the second podium finish, just one point behind the Chinese team. India was a distant third with 297 points.

In the women’s double trap event, a single competition determines both individual medalists and team winners. The scores of three shooters from each country are combined for the team victory.

Son fell short of winning an individual medal after finishing fourth with 105 points. Lee earned 77 points to stand at seventh.

Thursday’s achievements allowed South Korea to accomplish its stated goal of taking up to seven gold medals from the shooting range on home soil.

South Korea won a team gold medal at the 2006 Asiad and silver at the 2010 games in the women’s double trap discipline.

In the men’s double trap event also held at Hwaseong, South Korea came short of the podium finish, scoring 401 points for fourth. Qatar was the gold medal winner with 401 points, with China taking silver and Kuwait earning bronze. (Yonhap)

INCHEON (Yonhap) ― South Korea clinched a team silver and also an individual silver in the men’s 25-meter standard pistol event at the Asian Games on Thursday.

The team of Kim Jun-hong, Jang Dae-kyu and Kang Min-su put together 1,707 points to take the silver medal at Ongnyeon International Shooting Range in Incheon. China took gold with 1,710 points, and the Singaporean team got 1,692 points for bronze.

The 24-year-old Kim also won his own silver medal after shooting 574 points, missing out on his chance to be the host nation’s first triple gold winner at this Asiad. On Wednesday, he reached the top of the podium twice, once on his own and the other along with his two teammates, in the 25 m rapid fire pistol.

China’s Ding Feng took gold with 577 points, and Minh Thanh Ha of Vietnam grabbed bronze with 571 points.

In the 25-meter standard pistol event, a single competition determines both individual medalists and team winners. The scores of three shooters from each country are combined for the team victory.
