South Korea’s leading automaker Hyundai Motor’s hybrid car sales in the U.S. grew just over 9 percent in the first quarter to become the fourth best-selling vehicle in the segment, industry data showed Monday.

The Sonata -- the only hybrid model available from Hyundai in the U.S. -- sold a total of 4,436 units during the January to March period, according to U.S. website Hybridcars.com. Hyundai Motor’s Seoul headquarters confirmed the figures.

The Sonata hybrid accounted for 6 percent of total hybrid sales in the U.S. in the first quarter, up from the 4.7 percent it recorded in 2015.

Hyundai’s rivals such as Toyota, Ford and Lexus recorded contracted hybrid sales, although Toyota’s Prius remained the market leader.

Since its U.S. debut in April 2011, the Sonata hybrid has sold more than 100,000 units. Its latest version of the model was launched in July last year. In the second half of the year, Hyundai plans to launch its Ioniq hybrid.

Total hybrid sales in the U.S. came to 384,404 in 2015, dragged down from 452,152 units a year earlier on falling crude oil prices.
