50년 만에 주인에게 돌아간 편지

한 소년이 대서양에 띄운 유리병 편지가 반세기 만에 발견되어 주인에게 돌아갔다고 월요일 NBC가 보도했다.

1963년 8월 16일 가족과 함께 뉴저지주 해안가를 찾은 12살 소년 데니스 콤사는 과학실험을 하기 위해 편지가 든 유리병을 바다에 던졌다.

이 유리병은 2012년 11월 허리케인 샌디가 지나간지 약 일주일 뒤, 자신의 누나 집 주변의잔해더미를 청소하던 놀먼 스탠턴에 의해 발견됐다.

편지가 든 유리병이 50년만에 발견된 장소는 유리병이 처음 던져진 곳에서 불과 약 300m 떨어져 있는 지점이다.

유리병에는 콤사의 집주소가 적힌 편지봉투와 5센트가 함께 들어 있었다.

편지는 “이 글을 읽는 누군가에게… 아래 질문에 답변한 후 우편으로 보내주세요. 12살 데니스 콤사의 과학 실험입니다” 라는 내용으로 시작되어 유리병이 발견된 장소와 시기를 묻는 질문이 포함되어 있었다.

현재 백발이 된 61세 콤사는 어린시절의 추억을 돌려받은 것에 기뻐하며, "불가능한 것은 없다"라고 말했다.

또한 이 사건이 허리케인 샌디의 피해자들이 희망을 갖게 되는 계기가 됐으면 한다고 전했다.

Message in a bottle sent back to the owner half-century later

A message in a bottle that was thrown into the ocean was returned to the owner after 50 years, NBC reported on Monday.

A 12-year-old American boy, Dennis Komsa, who visited the New Jersey coast with his family, tossed a glass with a piece of paper in it, for the purpose of scientific experiment on Aug. 16, 1963.

In November 2012, the jar was spotted by Norman Stanton who was cleaning up the debris from the Hurricane Sandy outside his sister’s house in the New Jersey coast, about two-tenth of a mile away from where it was initially thrown.

The bottle contained a note and five cents for a stamp to post the message back to Komsa.

The letter says, “To whom it may concern, please fill out the following questions and mail. This is a scientific experiment by Dennis Komsa,” with some questions added: “Where was the jar found? When was it found? How was it found? And anything else which might help me?”

Komsa, who is now 61, living in Hillsborough, New Jersey said, “Things happen for a reason,” after he received his boyhood glass and note from Stanton. “It shows anything is possible.”
