양악 수술 후유증 비관, 20대 남성 한강 투신 후 의식불명

18일 A씨(27)가 한강시민공원 망원지구 둔치에서 양악수술 후유증을 호소하다 투신했다. A씨는 소방대원들의 도움으로 현장에서 구조됐지만 현재 의식불명 상태다.

전날 밤 A씨는 친구에게 지난 3월에 받았던 수술 이후 겪었던 부작용에 대해 털어놓으며 ‘희망이 없다,’ ‘죽고싶다,’ 고 이야기 한 것으로 알려졌다. 경찰은 자세한 사고 경위를 조사할 예정이다.

양악 수술은 부정교합을 교정하는 의료 목적으로 쓰였으나 최근 연예인들이 미용 목적으로 수술대에 오르는 경우가 많아지면서 일반인 사이에서도 유행처럼 번지고 있다.

지난 6월 서울 논현동의 한 성형외과에서 30대 여성이 턱 안면윤곽수술을 받던 도중 숨지는 등 양악수술 관련 피해가 속출하고 있다.

한국 소비자원에 따르면, 양악수술 관련 피해 상담 건수가 2010년 29건에서 2012년 89건으로 급증한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

Man throws himself into river after plastic surgery

A man nearly drowned in the Hangang River on Sunday after suffering from the aftereffects of a bimaxillary operation.

The man was rescued but remained unconscious as of noon on Monday.

On Saturday night, the man and his friend, both 27, talked about the pain and side effects of the surgery he underwent in March, according to the Mapo Police Station in Seoul.

A rescue team arrived at the scene within 10 minutes after the friend reported the suicide attempt, and immediately took him to a nearby hospital.

The police are carrying out further investigations based on the friend’s testimony.

A bimaxillary operation is a type of plastic surgery that cuts out parts of the upper and lower jaws to modify their shape or position. It was initially introduced as a treatment for a medical condition. However, as a number of celebrities here have had the operation for cosmetic reasons, it gained popularity despite the danger of nerve damage and paralysis.

According to the Korea Consumer Agency, the number of reported complaints over the operation is on the rise, from 29 cases in 2010 to 89 in 2012.
