A horrid story of a Bangladesh woman who was forced to remarry her former husband after he threw acid on her face has been reported by the Huffington Post.

Nurbanu, a 36-year-old housewife whose full name was not revealed, was attacked by her ex-husband eight days after she divorced him for having an affair. The man doused Nurbanu with acid, making her permanently blind and so severely injured that she is no longer even able to prepare a meal for herself.

While the attacker was serving time for his heinous crime, his mother approached Nurbanu and coerced her to sign an affidavit to have him released.

Nurbanu’s troubles did not end there as the shameless family then forced her to remarry the man who made her life so miserable.

“People would think a husband would take care of a blind wife. But this doesn’t happen,” Nurbanu told the Huffingtpon Post.

She said she still gets physically and verbally abused by her husband. “This is how my days go by,” she said.

Nurbanu’s story is only one of hundreds of cases where women were abused by men who give no regards to their rights as human beings.

According to the Acid Survivors’ Foundation (ASF) in Bangladesh, there were 111 acid attacks in the country in 2011, a significant decrease from 500 in 2002 but a sizable number nevertheless.

The ASF’s chief Monira Rahman said such crimes against women can be banished when women enjoy equal rights.

“Only by empowering women and ensuring equality we will have a society which has zero tolerance for violence against women,” she said.

In terms of gender equality, Bangladesh ranked near the very bottom at 140 in a recent Human Development Report.

인터넷 언론 허핑턴 포스트 보도에 따르면 평범한 가정부이던 누르바누 (36) 씨는 몇 년 전 남편이 불륜을 저지르는 것을 목격하고 이혼을 요구했다.

그러나 이혼한지 8일만에 전 남편은 그녀의 집에 오토바이를 타고 찾아와 그녀의 얼굴에 염산을 뿌렸다. 이 사건으로 인해 그녀는 영구적으로 시력을 잃었으며 심한 부상을 입었다.

더욱 황당한 일은 전 남편이 수감된 다음에 일어났다. 전 남편의 어머니가 누르바누 씨에게 찾아와 그를 석방시키기 위해 그녀에게 그에게 유리한 진술서를 요구한 것. 

뻔뻔한 전 남편의 식구들은 이에 그치지 않고 누르바누 씨가 그와 다시 결혼할 것을 강요했다. 결국 그녀는 이에 응했다.

누르바누 씨는 허핑턴 포스트와의 인터뷰에서 아직도 남편으로부터 육체적, 정신적 학대를 받고 있다고 말했다. “사람들은 남편이 눈이 먼 아내에게 잘해줄 거라고 생각하겠죠. 하지만 그런 일은 일어나지 않아요”라고 그녀는 말했다.

누르바누 씨 외에도 염산공격으로 인생이 엉망이 된 피해자는 백여명이 넘는다.

방글라데시 염산테러생존자재단 (Acid Survivors' Foundation: ASF)에 따르면 지난해 염산공격 피해자는 111명에 달한다고 한다. 이는 2002년 500명에 비하면 줄어든 수치이지만 아직도 인권유린이 심각하다는 것을 알 수 있다.

ASF 회장 모니라 라만은 이러한 끔찍한 범죄를 막기 위해서는 여성들에게 동등한 권리가 부여되어야 한다고 주장했다.

“여성들의 지위를 향상시키고 평등을 보장하는 것이 여성에 대한 폭력을 용납하지 않는 사회를 만들 수 있는 방법입니다”라고 그녀는 말했다.

최근 유엔 인간개발보고서에 따르면 방글라데시는 남녀평등 지수에서 조사된 177개국 중에 하위권인 140에 그쳤다.
