Budget carrier passengers top 100 mln in 11 years

The cumulative number of passengers of South Korea's low-cost carriers has topped 100 million since they began service here 11 years ago, data showed Sunday.

The number of people using domestic and international flights by local LCCs reached 114.79 million after the first LCC was launched in August 2005, according to the data by the Korea Airports Corp. and the Incheon International Airport Corp.


LCC passengers on domestic flights came to 81.32 million during the cited period, and those from international flights totaled

33.47 million, the data showed.

Jeju Air Co., which is owned by Aekyung Industrial Co., transported 34.31 million, the largest, during the cited period, the data showed.

Air Busan Co., an affiliate of Asiana Airlines, came next by flying 24.25 million passengers, followed by Jin Air, the unit of Korean Air, with 22.5 million, the data showed.

A total of 18.22 million travelers used Eastar Co., and 14.65 million passengers traveled with T'way Airlines, according to the data.

The number of passengers using LCCs is forecast to increase as Air Seoul, a new low-cost carrier of Asiana, will kick off its service Monday. (Yonhap)
