K-pop star Rain will face disciplinary action for dating a top TV actress while on official military duty, the defense ministry said Thursday, in the wake of an outpouring of criticism over the special treatment of celebrities while they fulfill their mandatory military service.

The latest move comes after local media reported the 30-year-old singer, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, went on dates with actress Kim Tae-hee on several occasions while he was on leave last month.

The top singer well-known in other Asian nations is now serving as what the military has dubbed an "entertainment soldier" in a military unit that provides programming for TV and radio broadcasts to promote the military. He will be discharged in July.

"Corporal Jung Ji-hoon went out to practice (songs) as part of his official duties and he had private contacts (with Kim). Private contacts are seen as a violation of service rules," ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said in a briefing.

His battalion will hold a disciplinary meeting next week to issue "proportional punishment," Kim said without elaborating on the level of punishment.

All able-bodied South Korean men are conscripted to serve about two years in the armed forces.

The military's alleged special treatment of celebrities on service has frequently been the subject of criticism from opposition lawmakers during regular parliamentary audits into government offices.

According to the ministry, Rain spent 71 days off duty last year, his first year serving in the military unit. The number is way larger than the average of 43 days given to ordinary soldiers from 2009 through last year. (Yonhap News)

비는 군복무 도중 배우 김태희 (33)와의 교제하는 과정에서 복무 규정을 위반한 것으로 알려졌다. 군 당국에 따르면 비는 지난해 11월23일, 12월2일, 12월9일 논현동에 있는 개인연습실에서 최신곡 편집 작업을 하고 나서 오후 9~10시 사이에 복귀하면서 3차례에 걸쳐 김씨를 만났다고 한다.

국방부는 이와 관련해 비를 징계위원회에 회부할 예정이라고 밝혔다.

김민석 국방부 대변인은 이날 정례브리핑에서 "정지훈 상병이 출타한 것은 공무 출타로 (신곡을) 연습하기 위해 나간 것인데 돌아오는 과정에서 사적인 접촉이 있었던 것은 사실이고 사적인 접촉은 규정 위반으로 볼 수 있다"고 밝혔다.

김 대변인은 비가 소속된 국방부 근무지원 대대에서 다음주에 징계위를 열어 조치할 것이라고 밝혔다. 김 대변인은 이 조치가 “영창은 아닐 것 같다”라고 덧붙였다. (코리아헤럴드)
