LG Display Co., the world‘s No. 2 display maker, introduced an 84-inch ultra definition (UD) panel for an electronic chalkboard on Wednesday as part of its moves to jump-start growth in the burgeoning market.

The market for electronic chalkboards, which enable schools and businesses to share and utilize multimedia contents in addition to existing analog features, is expected to grow to 1.05 million units next year.

LG’s 84-inch UD panel, which the company claimed is the largest in the world, is 3.5 times brighter than existing products, the company said in a press release.

The panel also shows images that are eight times sharper than the electronic chalkboards currently sold in the market, according to LG.

“Since the market for public display is becoming a new growth engine for the LCD industry, LG Display seeks to ramp up its market presence with advanced technology and products,” a company executive said.

LG Display has inked supply contracts with some leading overseas electronic board manufacturers and plans to launch the product in Korea and China later this year.

The company also plans to take the product to the North American and European markets in the first half of 2013, according to LG Display. (Yonhap News)

LG디스플레이가 세계 최초로 초고해상도의 84인치 전자칠판용 LCD를 출시했다고 17일 밝혔다.

전자칠판은 기존의 아날로그 방식 칠판을 디지털화해 필기는 물론 사진과 동영상 자료를 자유자재로 활용하고 공유하는 디스플레이다.

이번에 출시된 전자칠판용 84인치 UD(Ultra Definition: 초고해상도) 패널은 크기가 가로 약 1.9ｍ, 세로 약 1.1ｍ로 LCD로 만든 전자칠판 중 가장 크다.

밝기는 최대 350nit로 기존의 프로젝터형 전자칠판과 비교해 3.5배 이상 밝다.

해상도도 UD 화질(약 830만 화소)로 HD급인 기존 프로젝터형 전자칠판보다 8배 이상 선명하다.

또한 프로젝터형 전자칠판을 사용할 때 발표자의 그림자가 화면을 가리는 현상도 없어 가독성과 집중도를 높일 수 있다.

터치 기능도 내장 가능해 하나의 화면에서 시청각 자료 활용과 필기를 동시에 할 수 있으며 FPR(편광필름패턴) 3D 기능을 추가하면 교실의 모든 학생이 동시에 3D를 볼 수 있다.

LG디스플레이는 주요 국가의 전자칠판 1위 업체와 공급 계약을 맺었으며 올해 말에 한국과 중국, 내년 상반기에 북미와 유럽에서 이 제품을 선보일 예정이다.

LG디스플레이 관계자는 “내년 전자칠판의 시장 규모는 105만대 수준이지만 전세계 교실 수가 3천800만개이고 현대 교육에는 다양한 멀티미디어 콘텐츠와 정보가 필요해 전자칠판 시장을 선점하려는 업계의 관심이 높아지고 있다”고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
