The 15th Seoul International Dance Festival (SIDance), the nation’s largest annual dance bash, kicks off on Oct. 5 for its 15-day run, with a total of four pieces officially banned for teenagers.

One of the most reputable genre showcases here, the event is presented by the local section of the International Dance Council CID-UNESCO. Fifty-three dance companies from 16 countries will present 57 works during the festival.

This year’s edition has been receiving a lot of attention even before the opening, mostly due to the Korea Media Rating Board’s decision to give an R rating to four of the 57 works. According to SIDance, it is the first time that the state-run review board has banned the festival’s works for children and teenagers.

Ironically, the ban has boosted ticket sales. One of the four R-rated works is French-Canadian choreographer Daniel Leveille’s all-nude performance “Amour, Acide et noix” (Love, Sour, and Dreadful).

A raw expose of the human condition, the show’s dancers are to perform in full nudity. Tickets were instantly sold out the day its nudity was publicized, according to the event’s organizers.

“We’ve invited these works from all over the world, and our hope is to have as many people as possible to see these works,” Ko In-ah, assistant manager of CID-UNESCO Seoul, told The Korea Herald.

“We are glad that the tickets are selling well. But at the same time, we want to stress that the festival isn’t just about nudity. There’s so much to enjoy for people of different age groups.”

This year’s edition opens with Swedish contemporary dance company Cullberg Ballet’s performance. Founded in 1967, the troupe is famous for its modern interpretation of classical ballet, including “Swan Lake,” and “Giselle.” Their last visit to Korea took place in 2003.

The opening performance consists of different scenes from two of their original repertoires ― “Xspectacle” and “Black with Flowers”― as well as their dance film “40 M Under.”

Another notable show is Israeli choreographer Yasmeen Godder’s piece “Love Fire.” The piece is to be performed to well-known classical waltz pieces, ranging from Chopin and Shostakovich to Strauss. The show is visually intense and often disturbing; one of its scenes involves a dancer ripping up a human-figure doll and taking out its organs.

“Taking into consideration the cultural and personal distance from the music, a complex and humorous journey evolves on stage dealing with different understandings of what is ‘romantic,’” says Godder’s website about the piece.

“The desire to fall in love, to lose control, to be transformed and taken by passion are explored through bold physicality and bizarre imagery, which give a new twist to stereotypes of male and female identity.”

“Love Fire” is, along with Leveille’s “Love, Sour, and Dreadful,” one of the four pieces that received an R rating from the government. SIDance said they were rather surprised to find out about the review board’s decision about the piece.

“We were told that they decided to ban the piece for youngsters because one of the dance movements in the show reminds one of an act of masturbation,” Ko from SIDance told The Korea Herald.

“None of our staff members interpreted the movement that way.”

This year’s edition also includes a performance by homeless people in Seoul, as well as teenagers. SIDance calls these performances “community dance.” Seoul-based Seoul Ballet Theater has been offering dance classes for the homeless since last year, and its dancers will be performing along with the homeless for the upcoming show.

Also, a total of 10 local choreographers were each sent to 10 different youth centers in Seoul, and worked with the young people for the past six months to prepare for the upcoming festival.

“These performances are the product of CID-UNESCO’s efforts to contribute something to society,” said Ko. “We’ve been thinking about the role of dance in society, and how it can make a difference for the better.”

시댄스 ‘19금 안무’에 연일 매진행렬!

10월 5일부터 시작하는 국내 최대 규모의 연례 무용행사 제 15회 세계무용축제(SIDance)가 15일간의 행사기간 동안 ‘19금’ 네 작품을 포함해 다양한 작품을 선보인다.

국내 최고의 무용 쇼케이스인 이번 행사는 국제무용협회 한국지부의 주관 하에 16개국 출신의 53개 무용단이 총 57편의 작품이 무대에 오른다.

특히 올해는 총 57편의 작품 가운데 네 편이 영상물등급위원회로부터 ‘미성년자관람불가’ 판정을 받아 행사 전부터 대중의 이목이 집중되고 있다. 주최측에 따르면 현재까지 세계무용축제의 작품 가운데 심의위원회로부터 미성년자 관람불가 판정이 나온 것은 이번이 처음이다.

그러나 이 같은 ‘19금’ 판정이 오히려 축제 관람권 판매를 촉진시키는 결과를 낳고 있다.

이번에 ‘19금’ 판정을 받은 프랑스계 캐나다인 안무가 다니엘 리베르의 올 누드 퍼포먼스 ‘사랑, 시고 단단한(Amour, Acide et noix)’에서는 인간의 조건을 적나라하게 표현하기 위해 무용가들이 전라의 상태로 무대에 오를 예정이다.

주최측에 따르면 이러한 ‘전라 공연’ 소식이 공개된 당일 이 공연의 티켓은 즉시 매진됐다.

행사 관계자인 고인아 씨는 코리아헤럴드와의 인터뷰에서 “전 세계 각지에서 다양한 작품들이 초청됐다. 많은 사람들이 작품을 즐길 수 있기를 바란다”며 “티켓이 잘 팔리는 점은 기쁘지만 이번 축제가 ‘누드’만을 보여주기 위한 것이 아니며 다양한 연령층을 위한 공연들이 많다는 것을 강조하고 싶다”고 밝혔다.

올해 축제는 스웨덴 현대무용단인 ‘쿨베리 발레단’의 공연으로 문을 연다. 1967년 창단한 쿨베리 발레단은 ‘백조의 호수’나 ‘지젤’과 같은 고전 발레의 탁월한 현대적 해석이 강점이다.

이번 개막공연에서는 쿨베리 발레단의 오리지널 레퍼토리 가운데 ‘공연중(Xspectacle)’ ‘40미터 아래(40M Under)’, ‘검정과 꽃(Negro con Flores)’ 세 작품을 선보인다.

눈 여겨 볼만한 또 다른 공연으로는 이스라엘 안무가 야스민 고더(Yasmeen Godder)의 ‘사랑의 불빛(Love Fire)’이 있다. 이 작품은 쇼팽, 쇼스타코비치, 스트라우스 등 유명한 클래식 왈츠 곡과 함께 공연된다. 이 작품은 강렬한 시각적 연출이 특징인데, 공연 가운데는 무용수가 사람 모양의 인형을 찢으며 그 안에서 장기를 꺼내는 듯한 장면도 포함되어 있다.

고더의 웹사이트는 이 작품에 대해 “무대에서 복잡다단하고도 해학적인 여정을 통해 ‘낭만이란 무엇인가’에 대한 서로 다른 생각을 다루고 있다’ ‘이는 곧 사랑, 방황, 변신, 열정 등에 대한 열망이 대담한 육체적 표현과 기이한 이미지를 통해 탐구하는 과정이며, 남성과 여성이라는 성 정체성 고정관념에 신선한 전환점을 시사한다.”고 설명하고 있다.

고더의 ‘사랑의 불빛’은 리베르의 ‘사랑, 시고 단단한’과 함께 19금 등급을 받은 네 작품에 포함되었다.

주최측은 이와 같은 영등위의 심의결과가 다소 의외였다고 밝혔다. “(영등위에서는) 이 작품의 안무 가운데 하나가 자위행위를 연상시킨다는 이유로 청소년들에게 이 작품을 금지시켰다고 전해왔다”며 “그러나 관계자들 가운데 이 안무를 그런 식으로 해석하는 사람은 아무도 없다”고 관계자 고 씨는 덧붙였다.

한편, 올해 작품들 가운데는 서울시내의 노숙자들이 펼치는 무대, 청소년들이 만드는 무대도 포함되어 있다. 주최측은 이러한 공연들을 ‘커뮤니티댄스’로 지칭한다. 과천에 위치한 서울발레시어터(Seoul Ballet Theater)에서는 작년부터 노숙자들을 위한 무용 강좌를 제공하고 있으며 소속 무용가들이 이번 행사에서 노숙자들과 함께 공연을 선보일 예정이다.

또한 국내 무용가 10명이 서울시 소재 10개 청소년 수련관에서 지난 6개월관 준비해 온 공연도 무대에 오른다.

고씨는 “이러한 특별한 공연들은 주최측의 사회공헌활동의 일부로서, 협회에서는 우리 사회에서 무용의 역할과, 더 나을 사회를 만들기 위한 노력에 대해 고민해 왔다”고 밝혔다.
