   BEIJING (AFP) - China's Vice President Xi Jinping has made a public appearance, state media said Saturday, following swirling speculation about the whereabouts of Beijing's leader-in-waiting.

   Xi had not been seen in public since September 1 and cancelled meetings with four foreign dignitaries including US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, giving rise to intense speculation about his health.

   The vice president arrived at China Agricultural University Saturday morning for "activities marking this year's National Science Popularisation Day", state-run news agency Xinhua said.

   His unexplained disappearance came at a highly sensitive time for China, which is gearing up for a generational handover of power.

   On Thursday, he made his first public communication in nearly two weeks when state media said he had "expressed condolences on the death of old party comrade Huang Rong", who died on September 6 -- a day after Xi missed a planned meeting with Clinton.

   The report in the Guangxi Daily newspaper -- mouthpiece of the Communist Party committee in China's southern Guangxi region -- marked the first public communication by Xi since he delivered a speech on September 1.

   The news was published widely in China, but made no mention of Xi's health, which has been the subject of widespread speculation in recent days. Theories about his health have mentioned anything from back ache to a heart attack.

중국 시진핑(習近平) 국가 부주석이 2주 간의 침묵을 깨고 15일 공개석상에 등장함으로써 그의 안위를 둘러싼 의혹이 일단 해소됐다.

`시진핑 이상무'가 확인됨에 따라 중국 공산당 제18차 전국대표대회(당대회)를 비롯한 정치일정과 권력교체도 별일이 없는 한 순조롭게 추진될 것으로 전망된다.

신화통신이 이날 공개한 사진에 나타난 시 부주석은 비교적 건강한 모습이었다.

시 부주석이 지난 5일 힐러리 클린턴 미국 국무장관과의 면담을 돌연 취소하고 대중의 눈에서 사라지면서 그의 행방은 중국은 물론 세계의 관심사가 됐다.

차기 국가주석직 승계를 앞둔 시 부주석이 클린턴 장관 면담을 돌연 취소한 것부터가 정상적인 일이 아닌데다 관영 매체에 동정조차 보도되지 않는 것 역시 드문 일이기 때문이다.

시 부주석의 행방을 둘러싸고 운동 중 등부상을 당했다는 보도에서부터 심장 발작설, 간암 수술설, 변고설 등이 잇따라 제기되는 등 각종 의혹과 억측이 눈덩이처럼 확산했으며 이에따라 중국의 미래를 둘러싼 불안감도 조성됐다.

더욱이 댜오위다오(釣魚島) 사태가 국가적 긴급 현안으로 떠오른 상황에서도 시부주석의 `유고'가 지속되고 중국 외교부마저 그의 안위를 묻는 외국 언론의 질문에 묵묵부답으로 일관하면서 의혹을 더욱 키웠다.

물론 후진타오(胡錦濤) 국가주석이 러시아 블라디보스토크에서 열린 아시아ㆍ태평양경제협력체 정상회의에 참석하는 등 여타 지도자들이 국내외 업무를 정상적으로 수행하는 것에 비춰 시 부주석에게 큰 일이 일어나지는 않았을 것이라는 관측도 적지 않았다.

시 부주석이 이제 공개활동에 복귀함으로써 중국의 정치시계는 다시 정상적으로 작동하게 됐다.

특히 18차 당 대회에 차질이 생기는 것 아니냐는 우려도 사라지게 됐다. 중국은 다음주 정치국 회의와 제17기 7중전회를 열어 제18차 당 대회 준비상황을 점검하고 개최일정을 결정할 것으로 전망된다.
