Gimhae International Airport that serves South Korea's second-largest city and the neighboring South Gyeongsang Province is considering a second expansion to meet the spike in passenger traffic, the local airport authority said Sunday.

According to Korea Airport Corp., which manages 14 air terminals around the country, Gimhae is currently moving to carry out a preliminary feasibility test for the additional expansion, even before the first phase of enlarging the airport is completed in January 2017. It is also setting up plans to increase the size of its international passenger terminal. These review projects will cost some 350 million won ($302,700).

The latest action comes ahead of the central government's announcement on whether or not to build a completely new hub airport to service the southeastern part of the country or improve existing facilities.

"The review is being conducted independently of Seoul's upcoming decision that is expected out in June of 2016," a KAC official said. "If the government decides to expand existing facilities, Gimhae's latest move can save time."

Others said depending on Seoul's decision, the second phase of the expansion could be halted.

Initial government reviews rejected plans for a new airport, due to very high costs and intense rivalry between regions hoping to host the new airport. Milyang in the interior of the Gyeongsang region and Gadeok Island, south of Busan, have been vying to host the new transportation facility for some time.

Policymakers, however, started rechecking the latest developments in light of the steady surge in people using Gimhae airport, which is already struggling with overcapacity. The goal is to build infrastructure that can handle more than 8 million passengers annually.

As of last year, the airport handled 4.86 million people, and from January through October of this year, it processed just under 4.79 million, with the total expected to surpass 5.3 million by year's end.

Since 2006, passenger traffic has risen an average 16.4 percent annually. Even if the first phase of the expansion is finished on time, airport facilities will almost immediately hit peak capacity.

This expansion calls for total floor space of the international terminal to be expanded 1.3 times to 71,995 square meters so it can process 6.3 million people annually, up from 4.64 million at present. (Yonhap)
