The Korean Baseball Organization announced Friday the total number of spectators for the 2015 KBO League season set a new record at 7,622,494 - including the regular season, all-star series and postseason - beating the previous high of 7,533,408 in 2012.

The season got off to a bad start with frequent rain and gloomy weather attracting fewer spectators. The outbreak of the Middle East respiratory syndrome virus further set back the season in May.

However, as the outbreak was contained, the numbers showed recovery with more people eager to witness the championship game and playoffs.

This year’s record is significant as the number runs into a new upcycle after three years of holdback.

“There will be new baseball parks opening next year enabling more fans to better enjoy the game. We will make sure we meet the fans’ expectations,” said a representative from the KBO.
