South Korea's tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. ranked No. 2 in the global semiconductor market in terms of revenue last year, data showed Tuesday, while its smaller rival SK hynix Inc. was one of the fastest growing companies among top-notch players.

Samsung Electronics, the world's No. 1 smartphone maker, saw its sales of chips reach US$37.25 billion in 2014, up 8 percent from a year earlier, the data compiled by market tracker IC Insights Inc. showed. U.S.-based Intel Corp. retained its top spot at $51.36 billion.

The figures are based on the performance of all sectors, including NAND flash and dynamic random access memory chips.

Chipmakers and foundry firms, which make chip designs for other companies and do not have a semiconductor fabrication plant, were both included.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest chip foundry operator, ranked third at $24.97 billion, trailed by U.S. Qualcomm Inc. with $19.1 billion and Micron Technology, Inc. at $16.81 billion.

SK hynix, which ranked sixth globally at $15.83 billion, saw its sales advance 22 percent on-year, marking the second-largest growth among top-notch players next to TSMC, which posted a 25 percent on-year rise, the data showed.

Among the top 10 players, five were based in the U.S., while two were from South Korea. Taiwan and Japan each had one.

Europe-based multinational firm STMicroelectronics was also included on the list at $7.34 billion. (Yonhap)
