Police on Monday summoned a former Democratic Labor Party deputy spokesperson for questioning over her alleged remarks sympathetic to North Korea made during a series of public talks.

Hwang Sun, 39, was accused by conservative groups along with Shin Eun-mi, a Korean-American woman, of positively rating former and incumbent North Korean leaders and describing the North as a leading country in terms of human rights protection and welfare.

Hwang has also been probed by police on suspicion of praising the communist country via her Internet broadcasting program from
2011 until recently, according to police.

In South Korea, any "anti-state" activities attempting to praise, encourage or propagandize North Korean political ideals are strictly prohibited under the National Security Law.

Police said they recently extended an overseas exit ban on Shin till Jan. 9, adding that they are considering an additional probe of her after four summonses.

Police also said they plan to send the case to the prosecution as soon as they finish questioning the duo early next month with a recommendation they be indicted without physical detention.

Prosecutors may decide to deport Shin instead of prosecuting her, according to prosecution sources. (Yonhap)
