345년의 역사를 자랑하는 독일의 화학, 바이오테크놀로지 기업인 머크 사의 한국 지사의 신임 사장 미하엘 그룬트는 한국에서의 “OLED 사업 확대를 위한 투자를 늘리겠다,” 고 15일 취임 간담회에서 밝혔다.
미하엘 사장의 발언은 올 초 전임인 유르겐 쾨닉 전 대표와 함께 삼성디스플레이 김기남 사장과의 만남 이후에 이루어 진 것이라, 삼성과의 협력을 강화하는 것이 아니냐는 산업계는 추측하고 있다. 김 사장과의 만남에서 미하엘 사장은 OLED 기술에 특히, 플렉서블 OLED 대한 협력강화에 대한 의견을 나눈 것으로 알려 졌다.
“우리는 파트너들과 현재 뿐만 아니라 미래에도 지속 될 수 있는 성공적인 비즈니스 관계를 원한다,”고 말하며 “새로운 기술 개발을 위한 노력을 끊임 없이 하겠다,”고 밝혔다.
또한 “OLED가 LED를 순식간에 대체하지 않을 것이기 때문에 LED 사업에 대한 투자도 계속 유지 할 것,” 이며, OLED기술도 산업의 흐름을 반영해 보완 강화 할 예정” 이라고 밝혔다.

Merck to bolster OLED investment

The new president of Merck Korea, an affiliate of one of the world’s largest biotechnology and chemical firms, said at his inauguration event Monday that his company would invest more in the organic light-emitting diode business in Korea.
“Technological development takes place so fast in Korea. That is the reason why we are here doing business rather than any other places,” said Michael Grund, the newly appointed president of the chemical firm.
The 45-year old president said the firm “will enforce the OLED business,” but declined to elaborate on how much investment the Germany-based company would make in Korea and on any plans to establish partnerships with local firms.
The new president of the Merck affiliate reportedly had a meeting with Kim Ki-nam, the president of Samsung Display, on his visit to the headquarters of the Korean tech giant in Gangnam earlier this month. The two discussed strengthening cooperation in OLED technology such as flexible displays.
Merck has maintained a business relationship with big firms in the display field such as Samsung Display and LG Display.
The new president and his predecessor Juergen Koenig have paid visits to Korean conglomerates in major sectors such as the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries in which the chemical firm is also doing business.
“We would like to maintain a long successful relationship not only today but also in the future with partners. Merck will make efforts to explore new technology development,” Grund said.
The firm said it would also continue to conduct research and development in the LED business as OLED technology would not immediately replace LEDs.
