Gallery DOS presents a solo exhibition of artist Choi Eun-hyea this week as part of the gallery’s special exhibitions for up-and-coming artists it selected for this year.

Choi, one of the five selected artists, explores a subject that is rarely dealt with in painting ― the journey of light. Light, which largely remained an auxiliary element determining the tone of paintings, has emerged as an independent subject in paintings as contemporary artists explore diverse subjects for their works.

The artist follows traces of light and depicts it using both traditional painting tools such as canvas, paint and other media, such as acrylic boxes and LED lights. 

“I find formative language in the relationship between time and space and the passage of light. I draw the point where space and the passage of light converge and rediscover its meaning,” wrote Choi in the artist’s note for the exhibition.

The artist’s images are based on drawings that trace the journey of light in space and time. The unconventional approach raises questions regarding definitions and boundaries of visual art.

While exploring unusual subjects ― light, space and time ― the exhibition sheds new light on drawing, which has emerged as an independent genre recently.

Choi Eun-hyea’s solo exhibition is on view from July 10-16 at Gallery DOS in Palpan-dong, Jongno, Seoul, followed by exhibitions of four other artists until Aug. 13.
