Domestic car sales drop in June

Hyundai Motor, Korea’s largest carmaker, said Monday that its sales advanced 8.2 percent in June from a year earlier on the back of solid sales in overseas markets.

Hyundai Motor sold a total of 404,368 vehicles last month, compared with 373,675 units the previous year, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Its domestic sales, however, declined 7 percent on-year to 55,548 units last month while overseas sales advanced 11.1 percent to 348,820 units, according to the carmaker.

Its affiliate Kia Motors said that its sales rose 2 percent in June from a year earlier on the back of brisk overseas sales.

Kia sold 236,992 units in June, compared with 232,281 units the previous year, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Its overseas sales rose 4.8 percent on-year to 199,292 units in June, offsetting a 10.5 percent on-year drop in domestic sales. Kia sold 37,700 vehicles last month in the domestic market.

GM Korea, the local unit of U.S. automaker General Motors Co., said that its June sales declined 10 percent from a year earlier amid the economic slowdown.

GM Korea sold 70,237 vehicles in June, compared with 78,021 units the previous year, the company said in a statement.

Domestic sales dropped 25 percent on-year to 10,161 units last month while exports of completed vehicles fell 6.8 percent to 60,076 units, according to the carmaker.

Ssangyong Motor said that its sales gained 28.1 percent in June from a year earlier on strong sales at home and abroad.

Ssangyong Motor sold 12,858 vehicles last month, compared with 10,038 units a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Domestic sales jumped 39.1 percent on-year to 5,608 units in June while its overseas sales advanced 16.6 percent to 7,004 units.

Renault Samsung Motors said that it sold 8,433 cars globally, including 4,423 in Korea and 4,010 abroad, last month.

In the domestic market, its sales soared 10.4 percent to 4,423 vehicles from the same period last year.
