South Korean college students who are unable to register for the courses they want are using money to buy places from other students, media outlets recently reported.

College students, especially seniors, vie struggle to get onto courses that are mandatory for graduation or ones taught by professors that hand out good grades, but there are often not enough places for all the students that want to sign up.

“It’s very challenging. During the regular period, you have to finish the whole process in less than 1 minute,” a college student in Korea, said in an interview with MBN news.

The students who have failed to register for preferred courses turn desperate and start to offer money to other students in exchange for the classes. The amount ranges from 30,000 won to 100,000 won.

The course-trading is due to a shortage of professors, as well as fierce competition between the students for good grades.

학기가 시작되면, 졸업을 앞둔 절박한 학생들이 하나 둘 속출하기 시작한다. 보통, 졸업을 하기 위한 필수이수 과목이나 학점을 잘 주기로 유명한 인기 강좌를 중심으로 경쟁이 치열해진다. 이들은 원하는 강의를 듣기 위해 3만원에서 10만원에 이르는 금액을 제시하고 거래하는데, 결코 대학생들에게 적은 돈이라고 할 수 없다.

부적절한 수업의 거래 현상은 상대적으로 적은 교수의 수 때문만이 아니라, 좋은 학점을 받기 위해 치열하게 경쟁하는 학교 분위기 때문이라고도 할 수 있다. (진은수 인턴기자/코리아헤럴드)
