Psy, the popular singer-rapper behind “Gangnam Style,” has been named to receive a state order of cultural merit this year, along with nine other winners, the cultural ministry said Tuesday.

The 34-year-old singer whose original name is Park Jae-sang, rose to global fame after the music video of “Gangnam Style” featuring his horse-riding dance moves went viral on YouTube, attracting more than 600 million views.

He topped the coveted British Official Singles Chart and ranked second on the U.S. Billboard‘s Hot 100 Chart with the track. The video currently sits on No. 2 on YouTube’s all-time list of most-watched videos, next to Justin Bieber‘s “Baby.”

Psy will receive the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit, the fourth highest honor on a level of five, for his contribution to increasing the world’s awareness of Korean pop music and ensuing interest in Korea, the ministry said in a press release.

The 2012 list of medal winners also includes the director and stars of “Pieta,” winner of the Golden Lion for best film at this year‘s Venice Film Festival, according to the ministry.

Director Kim Ki-duk will receive the Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit, the second highest, while the film’s male and female leads, Lee Jung-jin and Jo Min-su will get the same honor as Psy, it said.

Among other winners are famous TV drama writer Kim Soo-hyeon, singer Song Chang-shik and TV actress Na Moon-hee.

The awards ceremony will be held on Nov. 19, the ministry said. (Yonhap News)

대중문화홍보 수훈甲 싸이 훈장받아

‘강남스타일’로 글로벌 스타가 된 싸이(본명 박재상•35)가 대중문화예술 분야의 최고 영예인 문화훈장의 옥관훈장 수훈자로 선정됐다.

또 영화 ‘피에타’로 올해 베니스영화제에서 황금사자상을 받은 김기덕 감독에게는 은관훈장이 돌아간다.

문화체육관광부는 6일 국무회의 의결을 거쳐 김기덕, 싸이 등 10명을 2012 대한민국 대중문화예술상 문화훈장 포상 대상자로 결정했다.

싸이는 ‘강남스타일’로 전 세계에 한국 대중음악을 알린 공을 인정받아 젊은 대중가수로는 이례적으로 훈장을 받게 됐다. ‘강남스타일’은 미국 빌보드 차트 ‘핫100’에서 2위를 차지하고 유튜브 조회 수 6억 건을 돌파하는 등 한국 대중문화 역사를 새롭게 썼다는 평가를 받는다.

김기덕 감독은 비주류로 출발해 세계적 영화제인 베니스영화제에서 최고상을 받았다는 점이 높게 평가받았다. 2004년에는 ‘사마리아’로 베를린영화제 감독상을 받았고, 같은 해 ‘빈집’으로는 베니스영화제에서 감독상을 받은 바 있다.

가수 금사향, 작가 김수현, 영화배우 윤일봉도 김 감독과 함께 은관문화훈장을 수훈한다.

가수 금사향은 ‘홍콩아가씨’ ‘님 계신 전선’ 등으로 사랑받았으며 한국전쟁과 베트남전쟁 때 수많은 위문공연을 소화한 것으로 유명하다. 김수현 작가는 ‘청춘의 덫’ ‘사랑과 야망’ 등 인기 드라마 58편과 21편의 영화 시나리오를 써 한류의 토대를 마련했다.

1948년 영화 ‘푸른 언덕’으로 데뷔해 120여 편의 영화에 출연한 배우 윤일봉은 한국을 대표하는 간판 멜로배우로 꼽힌다.

또 배우 나문희, 예술감독 송승환, 가수 송창식은 보관문화훈장을 받고, 싸이를 비롯해 배우 이정진과 조민수는 옥관문화훈장 수훈자로 결정됐다. 이정진과 조민수는 영화 ‘피에타’에 나란히 출연했다.

시상식은 오는 19일 오후 6시30분 올림픽공원 올림픽홀에서 개최된다. 한국콘텐츠진흥원이 주관하는 이 시상식에서는 샤이니, 미스에이 등 K팝 가수의 공연이 펼쳐지며 선후배 대중문화예술인의 합동 공연도 마련된다.
