The government will hold an extensive meeting on Friday to brace for a powerful typhoon expected to affect the nation early next week.

Typhoon Bolaven, which is named after a highland region in Laos, is expected to be the most powerful storm of the season for the country and to bring heavy rains to the southern island of Jeju from Monday before affecting the whole country the following day, according to the state weather agency.

The typhoon will likely cause huge damage to the country already suffering from recent heavy precipitations due to the unusually lengthy rainy spell of the early autumn season, according to the central disaster management headquarters.

During the emergency meeting involving nine ministries concerned and 16 regional governments, authorities decided to conduct a safety inspection into areas prone to landslides, and cordon off danger areas such as seawalls and seasides.

They also plan to encourage people living in such vulnerable regions to evacuate beforehand, and to double-check ships, vinyl greenhouses and street signs to minimize risks to people’s lives and property, according to the disaster agency.

In mid-July, Typhoon Khanun passed through the country, leaving one people dead and hundreds of passenger services canceled. (Yonhap News)

태풍 ‘볼라벤’에 정부 총력대응체계 가동

다음주 초 초대형 태풍 ‘볼라벤(BOLAVEN)’이 우리나라에 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상됨에 따라 정부가 총력대응체계를 가동한다.

중앙재난안전대책본부는 24일 오후 정부중앙청사 재난상황실에서 국방부와 국토해양부, 교육과학기술부 등 9개 중앙행정기관과 16개 시ㆍ도가 참석한 가운데 회의를 열고 태풍 대책을 점검한다.

중대본은 지난 11일부터 많은 비가 내린 상태에서 태풍까지 영향을 미칠 경우 인명ㆍ재산 피해가 예상되는 만큼 피해 최소화에 만전을 기하기로 했다.

중대본은 먼저 산사태 위험지구와 낡은 축대, 절개지 등 붕괴위험이 높은 취약지구를 점검키로 했다. 또 갯바위, 방파제 등 위험지역에는 사전에 출입통제를 위한 재난안전선을 설치한다.

선박과 어망ㆍ어구, 과수목 비닐하우스, 간판 등을 철저히 관리하고 대규모 공사장내 절개지나 하천내 설치된 공사용 가설도로의 자재 제거에도 나설 예정이다.

중대본은 “태풍에 대비해 집 주변 하수구와 노후 축대, 옹벽, 절개지에 대해 사전점검을 하고 산사태와 상습침수구역 등 위험지역내 주민은 안전한 곳으로 사전에 대피해달라”고 당부했다.

기상청은 제15호 태풍 볼라벤이 규모와 강도 면에서 올해 들어 발생한 태풍 가운데 가장 강력하게 발달할 것으로 예상하고 있다. 볼라벤은 라오스에서 제출한 이름으로 고원의 명칭이다.

월요일인 27일 제주도와 남해안을 시작으로 28일은 전국이 볼라벤의 영향을 받아 비가 내릴 것으로 기상청은 내다봤다.
