Large luxury cruise ship arrives in Jeju Island

The largest luxury cruise ship to arrive in South Korea docked in the port of Jeju Saturday as the resort island moves to build itself into one of the leading tourist destinations in Northeast Asia.

The Voyager of the Seas cruise liner arrived early in the morning at Jeju Port to the fanfare of local authorities and traditional performances.

Jeju prepared special garlands and plaques for the passengers who arrived on the ship that weighs 137,276 gross tons, is 311 meters long, has a maximum width of 47.55 meters and stands 63 meters tall. The ship operated by Royal Caribbean International, based in the Bahamas, is the first super-large cruise ship to dock in the country. It can carry 3,400 passengers and has a crew of 1,181.

The provincial government hopes that the arrival of the cruise ship will be followed with other visits, which could help transform the island into a international resort. At present, the island off South Korea's southeastern coast is a favorite attraction for Chinese and Japanese tourists, although there has been a steady increase of people from other countries.

Jeju Governor Woo Keun-min, who was present to welcome the ship, said the arrival of the cruise ship opened a new chapter for the province. He said that once the naval based in the southern part of the island is completed in two years, 150,000 ton ships will be able to berth easily to disembark tourists.

'보이저 오브 더 시즈'호 제주 유람

우리나라에서는 처음으로 13만7천톤급 대형 크루즈선이 23일 제주에 입항했다.

미국 로열 캐리비언사의 바하마 선적 '보이저 오브 더 시즈'(Voyager of the se as)호는 이날 오전 6시20분께 중국인 관광객 등 3천400여명을 태우고 일본 나가사키 항을 출발해 제주항 외항으로 들어왔다.

제주도는 보이저호의 입항에 맞춰 제주항 외항 유람선부두에서 승객들에게 꽃 목걸이와 기념패를 전달하고, 난타ㆍ사물놀이 공연 등 다양한 환영행사를 열었다.

환영식에서 찰스 타이게(Charles Teige) 보이저호 선장은 "그동안 80여개 국가를 다녀왔는데 제주도 역시 아름다운 섬이란 것을 느낄 수 있다"며 "유럽과 미주지역을 중심으로 운항하는 보이저호는 앞으로 한국 등 극동지역 운항을 목표하고 있다"고 말했다.

타이게 선장은 이어 열린 기자간담회에서 "보이저호가 접안할 때 배밑이 물속 4 m 이상 내려가는 등 고난위지만 360도 회전하는 프로펠러가 제자리에서 방향을 바꿀 수 있게 하는 등 여러 기술로 안전하게 접안할 수 있게 한다"며 "(다른 나라와 비교

해도) 제주항 외항에 접안하는데 큰 어려움은 없었다"고 말했다.

우근민 제주도지사는 환영사에서 "앞으로 2년 후에는 제주 남쪽에 15만톤 크루저가 접안할 수 있는 항구를 정부와 제주도가 같이 만들 수 있게 된다"며 제주 민ㆍ군복합형 관광미항(제주해군기지)이 대형 크루저 입항지가 될 것이라고 밝혔다.

보이저호는 무게 13만7천276t, 길이 311m, 14층 높이로, 전 세계에서 10번째로 큰 초대형 크루즈선이다. 승객을 3천840명까지 태울 수 있으며 승무원은 1천181명이 다.

배에는 워터슬라이드를 갖춘 수영장, 3층짜리 대극장, 카지노, 암벽등반시설, 미니 골프장, 아이스 스케이팅 링크 등을 갖추고 있다.

제주에 온 관광객들은 제주시내 관광지를 둘러보고 쇼핑을 한 뒤 이날 오후 1시께 중국 상하이로 떠났다.
