일본 정부가 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 환자를 가려내는 방법으로 '차량 탑승'(드라이브 스루) 검사를 공식 도입했다. 17일 니혼게이자이신문에 따르면 일본 코로나19 대응 주무부처인 후생노동성은 한국이 도입해 세계적으로 확산시킨 이 방식의 검사를 할 수 있도록 추인하는 '사무연락' 문서를 전국의 지자체에 보냈다. 후생성은 이 문서에서 의사가 필요하다고 판단할 경우 차량에 탑승한 채로 진료할 수 있고, PCR(유전자증폭) 검사를 위한 검체 채취도 가능하다고 밝혔다. 한국에서 시작한 차량 탑승 검사는 대량의 검사를 효율적으로 할 수 있는 데다가 의료기관 건물 안에서 검체를 채취할 때보다 감염 위험이 낮은 것으로 알려지면서 세계 각국으로 급속히 보급됐다. 그러나 일본 정부는 그간 야외에서 진행하는 이 방식의 검사 과정에서 검체가 오염될 우려가 있는 점과 이를 도입한 나라 중에서 감염 확산이 억제되지 않은 사례가 있다는 점을 들어 공식 도입에 소극적인 입장을 유지했다.
