Creative mastermind behind 'Squid Game' earns Creator Tribute four years after series' win

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind the global phenomenon “Squid Game,” will receive the Creator Tribute at the 2025 Gotham Television Awards.
The Gotham Television Awards, held annually in New York City, is an American film ceremony that honors outstanding achievements in television.
The Creator Tribute category celebrates visionary artists and creators who have significantly shaped and expanded the boundaries of television.
“Since ‘Squid Game’'s breakout win at The Gotham Awards four years ago, its ascent has been nothing short of extraordinary — earning global acclaim, sweeping honors, and cementing its place as a landmark in modern television,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute via a press release on Thursday.
In 2021, the Gothams honored “Squid Game” with the award for Best Long Form Breakthrough Series.
“With his genre-defying series, Director Hwang has reshaped the possibilities of episodic storytelling, captivating audiences worldwide with a series that is both thrilling and culturally defining. We are proud to recognize ‘Squid Game’ and Director Hwang in this final chapter, in what promises to be an unforgettable moment at this year’s Gotham Television Awards.”
Winners will be celebrated at the ceremony on June 2 at Cipriani Wall Street, with the event livestreamed on Variety’s YouTube channel.
