N. Korea test-fired 3 short-range missiles this week: Japan newspaper

North Korea test-fired three short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea earlier this week, apparently as part of efforts to improve its missile technology, a Japanese newspaper said Friday.

North Korea launched what appeared to be KN-02 ground-to-ground missiles on Wednesday morning, according to multiple Japanese government sources quoted by the Sankei Shimbun.

The communist country also test-fired two short-range missiles on Dec. 19, shortly after it announced the death of its longtime leader Kim Jong-il. South Korean officials said they did not see the launch as anything more than test-firing.

The South's military believes North Korea is developing KN-06 missiles, which are an improvement over the KN-02, and has been test-firing them since last year to check their performance before deploying them. (Yonhap News)

이 신문은 복수의 일본 정부 소식통을 인용해 북한이 지난 11일 오전 동해를 향 해 단거리 탄도미사일 3발을 발사했으며, 이는 개량형 미사일 발사 시험으로 보인다 고 전했다.

신문에 의하면 이들 미사일은 모두 구 소련제 단거리 미사일인 SS21을 개량한 이동발사식의 KNO2(사정 약 120㎞)로 보인다.

북한은 KNO2를 개량한 지대공 미사일인 KN06(사정 100∼110㎞) 개발도 진행하고 있다. 따라서 이번에 발사한 미사일은 KNO6일 가능성도 제기되고 있다. 개량을 위한 성능 시험이 필요했을 것이기 때문이다.

북한은 김정일 국방위원장의 사망이 발표된 작년 12월 19일에도 2발의 단거리 미사일을 발사했었다.

당시 미국 군은 미사일의 움직임을 감시하기 위해 전자정찰기(RC135S)을 동해 상공에 띄워 경계를 강화했다.

일본 정부는 북한이 당초 미사일 발사 시험을 김정일 국방위원장 사망 이전에 실시하기로 했으나 김 위원장 사망으로 계획을 바꿔 일부만 발사하고 남은 것을 11 일 발사한 것으로 보고 있다.
