It is safe to say that the pantsless trend has firmly planted its roots in Korea, especially within the K-pop scene.
This look has triggered mixed reactions, with some arguing that it is a way of expressing freedom while others say that it is too provocative and simply inappropriate.
The now-trending no-pants look speaks for itself, featuring a style that discards pants, skirts or any bottom-covering attire, except for briefs, often paired with tights. The origins of this look can be traced back to the attire of dancers in the 1950s.
This trend first gained attention on various Korean online forums in 2022 when Kendall Jenner donned a look from Bottega Veneta’s spring 2023 collection, wearing black briefs over sheer black tights. The global trend became more apparent this spring when renowned brands such as Acne Studio, Gucci and Tom Ford showcased similar looks in their new collections.
In a recent teaser video for the K-pop band Le Sserafim's third EP, "Easy," member Yunjin is seen wearing a white bra top, grey briefs and translucent black tights.
Blackpink’s Lisa added her own touch to the trend by posting a photo on Instagram wearing what appears to be a gold metal corset around her waist with gold tights. She also performed in this outfit at the Le Gala des Pieces Jaunes concert on Jan. 27 in Paris.
K-pop girl band (G)I-dle's members appeared in their music video for “Super Lady” wearing bodysuits without pants.
Sistar19, a subunit from the now-defunct girl group Sistar, also embraced the trend by appearing on stage in white bra tops and matching white briefs.
"It reminds me of diapers," reads one comment on a related news article about the pantsless look sported by these K-pop stars.
Others pointed out that the trend might encourage teenagers to try out such looks.
"I hope they are more careful in choosing their outfits, considering their influence," another comment said.
There are also those who disagree, saying, "We should obtain the freedom to express ourselves." Others however highlighted the irony that Koreans praise celebrities overseas for pulling off the look, while criticizing celebrities here for doing the same.
