Around 100,000 new Apple iPhone 8 smartphones are believed to have been set up on the first day of sales, industry officials said Saturday.

The figure represents about 60-70 percent of the iPhone 7's first day of sales. Preorders for the iPhone 8 smartphones were also about 60-70 percent of the iPhone 7 series in South Korea, according to the officials.

US tech giant Apple started sales of the new iPhone 8 smartphones in South Korea on Friday.

Industry officials said the sluggish sales of the iPhone 8 come as some Apple users in South Korea are waiting for the iPhone X.

The US company has not yet decided on the release date of the iPhone X for South Korea.

The iPhone 8, which maintains most of the design of its predecessor, comes with a price tag of 946,000 won ($851) for the 64 GB edition. The 64 GB iPhone 8 Plus is 1.07 million won.
