A global cyberspace conference will be held in South Korea this week, providing a chance for experts and policymakers to discuss regional and global cooperation against growing threats in cyberspace, the foreign ministry said Monday.

The ministry said it will host the Inter-Regional Conference on Cyber/ICT Security jointly with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in Seoul for a two-day run from Tuesday.

OSCE is one of the world's largest security-oriented intergovernmental organizations of European countries. South Korea joined the organization in 1994 as an Asian Partner for Co-operation.

The cybersecurity conference will bring together about 100 experts and policymakers from OSCE member countries, the organization's cooperation partners, as well as those of the ASEAN Regional Forum, the ministry said.

They are expected to discuss a wide range of issues, including seeking regional and global cooperation, drawing up rules and regulations in cyberspace, and strengthening cybersecurity capacity, the ministry said.

The meeting comes amid heightened alert against increasing cyberspace confrontations among countries, growing hacking threats from North Korea feared to expand into the global financial sector.

South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Ahn Chong-ghee plans to deliver an opening speech in which he is expected to emphasize the importance of cooperation between the two regions and call for more efforts to draw attention to the seriousness of the threat from the North in cyberspace, according to the ministry.
