South Korea's ruling Saenuri Party kicked off the race to pick its new chairman with five candidates gunning for the top post.

While the number of candidates originally stood at six, Reps. Lee Ju-young and Choung Byoung-gug, both five-term lawmakers, agreed to join forces. In the last minute arrangement, Chung was picked to represent the so-called non-President Park Geun-hye faction within the party.

Other candidates include Rep. Joo Ho-young and Rep. Han Sun-kyo, both four-term lawmakers, and Rep. Kim Young-tae and Rep. Lee Jung-hyun, both three-term lawmakers.

At the party's convention slated for Aug. 9, 347,506 Saenuri members will cast their votes on who should lead the party.

The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea also finalized its candidates on Thursday. After repeatedly hesitating, Rep. Lee Jong-kul also decided to join the race, pushing up the total number of contenders for the party chairmanship to four.

Among Minjoo's candidates, Rep. Choo Mi-ae, Rep. Song Young-gil and Kim Sang-gon, a party personnel official, are considered to be in the pro-Moon Jae-in faction. Lee is considered to be more independent.

Moon Jae-in, who stepped down from the party's leadership earlier this year, had competed with President Park Geun-hye for South Korea's top elected office in late 2012. He is still considered a prominent potential presidential candidate in next year's race.

As the Minjoo earlier decided to shortlist the number of candidates to three, the party will hold a preliminary election next week. (Yonhap)
