Busan City said Wednesday that it had proposed a budget of 1 billion won ($837,000) to install 80 additional surveillance cameras, in a bid to deal with a surge in unprovoked violent crime.

Once the bill is approved by the Busan City Committee at the end of this month, 80 high-resolution surveillance cameras will be purchased and distributed between 16 districts within the city to be installed at locations identified by local police as crime hotspots.
The installation is anticipated to finish by September.
In a separate project, Busan City government is pushing to secure a further surveillance camera budget of 7.8 billion won by the end of this year.
Between 2014 and 2015, more than 700 surveillance cameras in the city that had resolutions of 0.4 megapixels were replaced with much clearer 2.0 megapixel products.
