The Trade, Industry and Energy Minister nominee Joo Hyung-hwan is expected to boost the country’s sluggish exports with his abundant experience in formulating economic policies.
As the incumbent vice finance minister, Joo overlooked the finance strategy section, including his position at the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
He has also worked at the presidential office back and forth since 2003, which added a political balance to formulating policies, observers said.
He was at the center of media attention for promoting a service industry reform bill, which will allow for-profit hospitals in the country.
He has also propagated the necessity to nurture the country’s services industry.
Joo graduated from Seoul National University and received a master’s degree in business administration at the University of Illinois.
