지난 20일 방송된 MBC ‘복면가왕’에서 가면을 벗은 ‘어디에서 나타났나 황금박쥐’ (이하 황금박쥐)의 정체는 가수 김승진으로 밝혀졌다.
이날 1라운드 대결에서 여성 보컬 ‘윙윙윙 고추잠자리 와 함께 무대에 오른 황금박쥐는 뛰어난 가창력에도 안타깝게 패배해 2라운드에 진출하지 못했다.
결국, 황금박쥐는 전람회의 ‘기억의 습작’을 부르며 얼굴을 공개했다.

“과거에는 인기가 많았지만 그게 오히려 내 발목을 잡았다. 그동안 과거 인기를 더 뛰어넘고 싶었다” 면서 그동안 활동이 뜸했던 이유를 밝혔다. “나이가 들고나니 좋아하는 음악을 계속 하기만 하면 된다는 것을 깨달았다”고 말했다.
김승진의 출연과 함께 그의 과거 인터뷰 내용 또한 재조명됐다.
그는 지난 2005년 한 매체와의 인터뷰에서 한동안 연예계 생활이 뜸했던 이유를 밝힌 적 있다. 김승진은 “그동안 어떻게 지냈느냐?”라는 물음에 “음반이 나오지 못해서 그렇지 꾸준히 음악은 했다”고 말했다.
“지난 10년은 제가 생각해도 괴로운 나날이었다”며 “1995년에 아버지께 마지막으로 한 번만 도와달라고 해서 1억 5,000만 원을 지원받아 음반을 제작했는데 IMF가 터졌다”라고 고백했다.
“돈은 떨어지고, 음반 제작은 흐지부지되고 도저히 집에 들어갈 수 없어 수중에 남은 단돈 5천 원을 들고 바로 집에서 나왔다”며 “그때부터 지금까지 10년 동안 떠돌이로 지냈다”고 고백했었다.
김승진은 1984년 1집 앨범 ‘오늘을 말할 거야’로 데뷔한 80년대 하이틴 스타로 대표곡으로는 ‘스잔’이 있다.

Kim Seung-jin, a singer at the height of his popularity in the 1980s, turned out to be the mysterious singer behind the mask with the alias “Golden Bat” on Sunday.
On the popular MBC TV show “King of Mask Singer,” in which contestants sing while wearing elaborate costumes and concealing their identities, Kim was competing with a female vocalist with the alias “Red Dragonfly” in the first round of the show. Both of them sang “Desert Island,” originally sung by Kim Choo-ja.
Kim, however, lost to “Red Dragonfly” and as a result he had to take off his mask and revealed his identity.
When Kim unveiled himself, both the audience and the judges were surprised to see the star who had long been out of the limelight.
“I wasn’t able to be active because my album releases were delayed due to many reasons,” Kim said during the show. “But from now on, I will continue my musical activities.”
In an interview with local media in 2005, Kim explained the reasons behind his long hiatus.
He continued to work on his music even though he couldn’t put out albums. In 1995, Kim asked his father for financial help amounting to 150 million won ($128,000) to produce an album, but his hope was dashed as the nation was hit hard by the Asian financial crisis, which affected the music industry as well.
“I was out of money and the album production was halted,” he said. “But I could not go back home. So I left my home immediately with only 5,000 won left in my pocket. Since then, I just wandered around for 10 years.”
Kim, 46, who made his debut in 1984, is especially known for his hit song “Suzanne.”
