Hana Financial Group announced Monday that it had nominated Hana Bank vice president Ham Young-joo as the sole candidate to become the first KEB Hana Bank president.

The financial authorities approved the banking group’s plan to merge Hana Bank and Korea Exchange Bank last week.

Group officials said Ham was nominated by KEB Hana Bank’s executive nomination committee and has already been approved by the board of directors.

He will be inaugurated as the new president if the nomination is approved at the shareholders meeting on Sept. 1.

“Ham is the right man to bring the merged banks together and create synergy in difficult financial times,” the committee said.

Ham began his career at Seoul Bank (now part of Hana Bank) in 1980 as a bank official, and worked his way up with his friendliness and hardworking nature, group officials said.

Having been known as a humble and communicative leader to his employees, Ham would be a leader who can improve business management and bring unions and staff together, bank officials said.
