The antitrust watchdog said Monday that it handed down a 143 million won ($130,000) fine to Hite Jinro, the nation’s largest distiller of soju, for holding a false advertisement campaign against its rival.

Hite Jinro handed out fliers and banners between March and May 2012, accusing Lotte Chilsung Beverage’s Cheoeum-Cheoreom soju of being improperly distilled, according to the Fair Trade Commission.

From its first launch back in 2006, Cheoeum-Cheoreom had swiftly grown popular among consumers, catching up closely with longtime market leader Chamisul by Hite Jinro.

“Hite Jinro carried out active attacks in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, organizing bars, restaurants and liquor stores to speak up against Lotte,” the FTC said.

Such actions were in violation of fair trade rules and caused confusion in the market, it said.
