South Korea will next week host a meeting with member nations of the world's largest intergovernmental security bloc to discuss security affairs and cooperation among the sides, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

The two-day session will begin Monday with the participation of more than 100 officials and experts from the 57 member nations of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and its 11 partner states, the ministry said in a press release.

This year's discussions will cover the evolving threats to security in Europe and Asia, cooperation on cyber security and disaster control, and experience-sharing and new areas of cooperation for security in Asia, it said.

As a side event, the meeting will also include a session on South Korea's Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative, which aims to expand ties in the region by first building trust through cooperation on soft issues, such as the environment and nuclear safety.

The meeting is "expected to help raise understanding of the NAPCI among the OSCE member states and contribute greatly to strengthening cooperation with the OSCE on the NAPCI by sharing in the OSCE's rich experience and expertise in multilateral security cooperation," the ministry said.

Among the top officials attending the event will be South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se, OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier, Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter and Thai Foreign Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn.

The OSCE-Asia meeting is an annual gathering hosted in rotation by one of the five Asian partner nations -- South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Afghanistan and Australia. (Yonhap)
