삼성전자가 미국 가상현실기기 업체 버툭스 (Virtuix)와 손 잡는다.
18일 업계에 따르면 삼성전자의 삼성기어VR이 버툭스사가 개발한 런닝머신 형태의 가상현실 기기 버툭스 옴니 (Virtuix Omni)와 연동이 될 것이라고 한다. 또한 내년 1월 미국 라스베가스에서 열리는 CES에서 버툭스 옴니와 삼성기어VR가 함께 전시될 것으로 알려졌다.
18일 업계에 따르면 삼성전자의 삼성기어VR이 버툭스사가 개발한 런닝머신 형태의 가상현실 기기 버툭스 옴니 (Virtuix Omni)와 연동이 될 것이라고 한다. 또한 내년 1월 미국 라스베가스에서 열리는 CES에서 버툭스 옴니와 삼성기어VR가 함께 전시될 것으로 알려졌다.
잔 지오트겔룩 (Jan Goetgeluk) 버툭스 대표는 지난 13일 미국 샌프란시스코에서 열린 삼성 개발자 회의에서 옴니와 삼성기어 VR연동에 대해 확인한 바 있다.
버툭스 옴니는 오큘러스의 리프트나 삼성기어VR과 같은 가상현실 헤드셋과 함께 연동이 되는 런닝머신으로, 사용자는 옴니 위에서 걷기와 달리기가 가능하고 360도 회전도 가능하다. 이처럼 움직임이 자유롭기 때문에 일대일 슈팅 등 생동감 넘치는 게임이 가능하며, 박물관이나 여행지를 직접 걸어 다니는 듯한 체험을 할 수도 있다.
내년 CES에서는 관람객들이 기어VR과 옴니를 이용해 국내외 게임사들의 가상현실게임을 직접 체험할 수 있게 된다.
한편, 잔 지오트겔룩 대표는 코엑스에서 18일부터 19일까지 열리는 DICON 2014 행사에 참가해 한국 소비자들에게 옴니를 소개 할 예정이다. 이번 방문 중 그는 삼성전자 등 파트너 사들과 미팅도 가질 것으로 보인다.
삼성전자는 페이스북의 오큘러스와 같은 하드웨어 업체뿐 아니라 마블과 태양의 서커스와 같은 콘텐트 제작 업체와의 협력도 모색하고 있다. 또한 국내외 중소 가상현실 게임업체에 투자하는 등 가상현실기술 시장 생태계를 조성하기 위한 각별한 노력을 기울이고 있다.

Tech giant Samsung Electronics has been making all-out efforts to partner with global software and hardware developers to grow the virtual reality business since unveiling its virtual reality headset Gear VR in September.
Participating in the 2014 Samsung Developer Conference held in San Francisco last Thursday, Virtuix chief executive Jan Goetgeluk said that the virtual reality treadmill would support Samsung’s Gear VR.
Samsung and the VR treadmill maker will likely demonstrate the Gear VR and the Omni together at the International CES to be held in Las Vegas in January 2015, according to the sources.
Since its first prototype was unveiled in 2013, the virtual reality treadmill has received a great deal of attention in the global tech market as many market experts said that it showed the future of gaming, allowing players to walk, or run, in all directions and jump while playing games on the dish-like equipment.
The Omni which has a wide array of possible applications including fitness, and health care is currently compatible with Xbox video games including the first-person shooters Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty.
The Virtuix CEO is visiting Seoul to take part in the DICON 2014, a global content conference, on Nov. 18-19.
Samsung is currently being inundated with partnership offers.
“The latest partnership with Virtuix may be one of the many in store” a market watcher said.
The electronics firm also recently announced that it would work together with movie producers including Marvel and DreamWorks, and the Canadian entertainment firm Cirque du Soleil.
