LG전자가 25일 선보이는 G워치 (G Watch)에 ‘홈챗’ 서비스를 탑재할 전망이다.
“G워치에 스마트 가전을 제어할 수 있는 홈챗 서비스가 적용될 예정이다”라고 익명을 요구한 한 LG전자 관계자가 전했다.
홈챗 서비스는 4월에 LG전자가 선보인 모바일 메신저 서비스로 스마트폰으로 가전제품과 친구처럼 일상 언어로 채팅하는 서비스다. 사용자가 모바일 메신저 ‘라인’에 접속한 뒤 통신모듈이 탑재되어 있는 가전제품을 친구들 등록하면 원격제어가 가능하다.
G워치가 가전제품과 어떠한 방식으로 연동되는지에 대해서는 밝히지 않았지만, 업계관계자는 ‘Q 보이스’와 같은 음성인식 기술이 사용될 가능성이 높다고 전했다. LG전자는 2012년 옵티머스 LTE2를 시작으로 음성인식 기능 ‘Q 보이스’를 탑재한 스마트폰을 출시하고 있다.
G워치는 적외선 통신모듈을 사용하여 TV와 같은 전자기기를 제어하는 삼성 기어2와 달리 USIM카드가 탑재되어 이동통신 기능이 가능할 것으로 알려졌다. 임태범 전자부품연구원 디지털미디어연구센터장은 “스마트워치에 USIM카드가 탑재되면, 사용자가 외부에서도 집안에 있는 스마트 가전기기를 제어할 수 있다”고 말했다.
LG전자 G워치는 안드로이드 웨어를 탑재한 첫 스마트워치로 25일 샌프란시스코에서 구글개발자대회에서 발표될 예정이다.
한편, LG전자측은 현재 탑재 계획에 대해 정해진 바가 없다고 밝혔다.

LG Electronics’ first smartwatch the LG G Watch is expected to sport its mobile messenger service to help control LG home appliances and electronics, according to industry sources on Tuesday.
“We plan on using the HomeChat service for the LG G Watch to control smart home appliances from LG Electronics,” said a source from LG Electronics, who declined to be identified.
The HomeChat service was first unveiled on April, allowing users to communicate with home appliances and electronics which have communications modules. When users register devices including refrigerators or washing machines as friends, they can control them through mobile messenger app Line.
Though the source did not specify how the HomeChat service will work in connecting the smartwatch to home appliances, industry watchers said it would most likely use voice recognition technology such as LG’s Q Voice service. The company already launched its voice recognition service Q Voice on its smartphones from 2012. Users can make a call, send a message or play music through voice.
LG Electronics officials said that nothing has been decided yet regarding the features of the G Watch.
The LG G Watch is expected to feature a non-removable SIM or uSIM inside, allowing the smartwatch to stay connected to the Internet. Currently, its rival Samsung Electronics’ Gear 2 has no Internet connection, controlling other devices such as televisions through infrared communication.
“If a smartwatch has a USIM card, it can help users directly control smart home appliances from afar without smartphones,” said Lim Tae-bum, head of the Korea Electronics Technology Institute’s smart media research center.
Apart from the HomeChat function, the LG G Watch is set to be the first device to run the new Android Wear operating system for wearables. Android wear is a new platform that extends Google’s operating system to the body starting with the wrist in the form of smartwatches. The device is also expected to feature always-on display, lightweight design and a 1.65-inch IPS LCD screen with a 280 x 280p resolution.
The LG G Watch will be unveiled at the Google’s I/O developers’ conference on June 25 in San Francisco.
