'SM표' 첫 뮤지컬에 대세 아이돌 엑소 가세

국내 굴지의 연예기획사 SM엔터테인먼트(이하 SM)가 처음 제작하는 뮤지컬에 SM의 '대세 아이돌' 엑소까지 힘을 싣는다.

23일 공연 관계자 등에 따르면 SM 자회사인 SM컬처&콘텐츠가 오는 6월 5일부터 8월 3일까지 서울 충무아트홀 대극장 무대에서 선보이는 라이선스 뮤지컬 '싱잉 인 더 레인'에 엑소 멤버 백현(본명 변백현·22)이 출연을 확정 지었다. 엑소 멤버 중 뮤지컬에 출연하는 건 백현이 처음이다.

'싱잉 인 더 레인'은 1952년 개봉된 동명 영화를 원작으로 한 뮤지컬로 1983년 런던에서 초연된 이후 지금까지 많은 사랑을 받고 있는 작품이다. 무명의 뮤지컬 배 우 캐시 셀든과 당대 최고의 영화배우 돈 록우드의 사랑 이야기를 다룬다.

남자 주인공이 우산을 접은 채 비를 맞으면서 탭댄스를 추는 장면으로 유명하다 . 국내에서는 남경주 주연으로 2003년 초연됐다.

백현과 함께 SM 소속 그룹 슈퍼주니어 규현과 샤이니의 온유 등도 출연할 예정이다. (연합)

K-pop star to play Don Lockwood in ‘Singin’ in the Rain’

Baek-hyun, a member of K-pop boy band EXO, is venturing into a new genre -- musicals.

He will take the lead role in “Singin’ in the Rain,” to be produced by SM Culture & Contents Co., a subsidiary of SM Entertainment.

Baek-hyun will play Don Lockwood, the male protagonist, in the stage production based on the 1952 namesake musical movie directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen.

Fellow SM stars including Super Junior’s Kyu-hyun and SHINee’s Onew will also be cast, according to SM Entertainment. Baek-hyun will be the first EXO member to perform in a musical.

The musical will run from June 5 to Aug. 3 at the Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul.

“Singin’ in the Rain,” beloved by many around the world, depicts the love story between a high-profile movie star, Don Lockwood, and an aspiring musical singer, Kathy Selden, in the 1920s, when “talking pictures” began to replace silent movies.

Movie “Singin’ in the Rain” and a Broadway musical of the same name are most famous for the scene where Lockwood tap dances and sings in a street in the rain.

The musical premiered in Korea in 2003, starring musical actor Nam Kyung-ju.
