메르세데스 벤츠의 더 뉴 S클래스 (The New S-Class) 출시를 위해 한국을 최초로 방문한 디터 제체 회장은 국내 1위 현대자동차에도 박수를 아끼지 않았다.
“지난 수년간의 발전에 깊은 존경심을 표한다”는 제체 회장은 현대자동차가 공공연하게 벤츠를 경쟁상대로 지명하는 점에 대해서는 “벤츠의 역사와 가치에 자신 있다”며 아직은 적수가 아니라고 전했다.
제체 회장은 27일 월드컵 경기장 평화공원에서 열린 출시행사에서 코리아헤럴드에 이같이 말했다.
현대자동차는 최근 신형 제네시스 등을 내놓으면서 BMW와 메르세데스 벤츠와 같은 독일 럭셔리 자동차 브랜드에 공식 도전장을 내밀었다. 하지만 제체 회장은 이날 함께 열린 언론간담회에서도 현대차는 경쟁대상이 아닌 “파트너”라고 못박았다.
한편, 출시 행사에는 장동건, 류현진, 김혜수와 이정재 등의 연예인을 비롯한 약 1,000명의 귀빈이 참석해 메세르세데스 벤츠의 플래그십 모델 출시를 축하했다.
이날 제체 회장은 “무사고 운전” 그리고 “인텔리젠트 드라이빙”을 최우선 모토로 꼽으며 더 뉴 S클래스는 디자인, 성능, 효율성 등 모든 면에서 업그레이드된 모델이라고 밝혔다.
더 뉴 S클래스는 2005년 이후 첫 풀 모델이며, 이전 모델보다 연료효율성은 최대 13% 높이고, 안전장치와 운전보조 장치가 운전자의 스트레스와 사고의 위험을 줄여주는 드라이빙 어시스턴스 패키지 플러스(Driving Assistance Package Plus)등을 추가했다.
제체 회장은 또한 최대 80km까지 가능한 무인운전기능을 강조하며, 더 큐 S클래스가 무인운전의 시대를 열 것으로 내다봤다.
국내에는 100대 한정으로 생산된 ‘더 뉴 S 500 롱 에디션1’과 V형 6기통 디젤 엔진을 탑재한 S 350 블루텍, V형 8기통 가솔린 엔진을 장착한 S 500 롱, V형 8기통 가솔린 AMG 엔진이 장착된 S 63 AMG 4MATIC 롱 등 6개 모델의 라인업으로 출시된다.
가격은 ‘더 뉴 S 350 블루텍’ 모델 1억2천990만원, ‘더 뉴 S 500 롱’ 모델 1억9천700만원, ‘더 뉴 S 500 롱 에디션1’ 모델 2억2천200만원, ‘더 뉴 S 63 AMG 4MATIC 롱’ 모델 2억1천300만원으로 책정됐다.

Daimler Group Chairman Chairman Dieter Zetsche expressed much enthusiasm toward Hyundai Motor’s recent success, but stressed that Mercedes-Benz is still a few notches higher as a premium brand.
“We have much respect for Hyundai,” Zetsche told The Korea Herald, adding it was fascinating to watch the “fantastic development” Korea’s No.1 carmaker has shown over the past years.
However, when asked if he saw Hyundai to be proper competition for the Mercedes, Zetsche appeared to select his words carefully.
“While the development Hyundai has shown is fantastic, we have every confidence in Mercedes0Benz,” he said, implying that world’s top luxury automakers.
On the same note, the chairman said he modestly wishes Hyundai the best.
Hyundai Motor, which recently saw the launch of its new flagship Genesis, has been singling out BMW and Mercedes-Benz as its competitor in the luxury car segment despite the huge discrepancy in price and brand value.
The Daimler chairman spoke on the sidelines of the launching event for the sixth generation S-Class held at the Pyeonghwa Park within World Cup Stadium on Wednesday.
It marked Zetsche’s first visit to Korea, the fifth largest market for Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class and S-Class lineup.
More than 1,000 people including celebrities such as Kim Hye-soo, Jang Dong-gun and Lee Jung-jae, along with sports stars like Ryu Hyun-jin took part in the launch.
In addition to intelligent and accident-free driving -- the top couple of slogans for the latest S-Class, Zetsche also indicated Mercedes-Benz was on its way to usher int he era of autonomous driving.
Noting that the New S-Class is able to drive up to 80 kilometers on autopilot, he said ”The S-Class points the way to autopilot in cars.“
