Hyundai Mobis is gaining a foothold in the global auto market with its leading-edge technologies.

The South Korean auto parts maker ranked eighth this year in the top 100 global OEM parts suppliers released by Automotive News, a Detroit-based auto newspaper. It has been on the top list for three consecutive years.

Hyundai Mobis’ business with global auto makers has become diversified in recent years. It has supplied parking brakes to GM, lamps to BMW and Volkswagen, intelligent battery sensors and audio to Daimler, and height sensors to Chrysler.

Domestically, it is known for its modules that help cut costs and streamline the car manufacturing process.

Hyundai Mobis said it would now focus on developing core technologies for intelligent cars such as lane keeping, automatic parking, collision avoidance, and technology to control the distance between cars.

To provide for the plug-in hybrid and fuel cell systems, the company will also seek to develop technologies for hybrid core parts.

The automaker has recently announced that it selected some 10 products, including advanced air-bags, motor driven power steering and electronic brakes to foster as globally competitive products.

This recent move reflects that Hyundai Mobis is keen to shift its structure from manufacturing-based to developing cutting-edge technologies.

“Focusing more on high-end technologies, we are aiming to boost exports to 20 percent by 2020, from the current 10 percent level,” said a Hyundai Mobis’ spokesperson.
