Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s top automaker, said Monday that it has sold more than 2 million units of its midsize Sonata sedan in the United States in more than two decades.

The move represents the steady popularity of the Sonata in the world’s second-largest automotive market.

The carmaker said sold 2.01 million units of various Sonata models since 1989 when it introduced the Sonata in the U.S., accounting for one-fourth of Hyundai cars sold in the country.

“The strong Sonata sales in the U.S. are believed to have raised Hyundai’s brand awareness,” a Hyundai official said.

The milestone came three months after cumulative sales of Hyundai’s compact Elantra in the U.S. surpassed the 2 million mark since its debut in 1991.

Hyundai Motor America, Hyundai’s U.S. sales arm, said last week that it sold 65,007 units in June, up 2 percent from a year ago. (Yonhap News)

“June was another record-breaking sales month for us in what has been a strong first half of the year,” said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of national sales, in a comment posted on the company’s website.

Hyundai and its smaller sister company Kia Motors Corp. are the flagship units of Hyundai Motor Group, the world’s fifth-largest carmaker. (Yonhap News)
