박근혜 대통령의 방미 기간 벌어진 '성추행 의혹'으로 경질된 윤창중 전 청와대 대변인은 11일 의혹을 전면 부인했다.

윤 전 대변인은 이날 오전 서울 종로구의 한 음식점에서 기자회견을 열고, 자신의 수행으로 배치한 여성 인턴을 호텔바와 자신의 호텔방에서 거듭 성추행했다는 의혹에 대해 전면 부인했다.

그는 여성인턴에 대해서는 "너무나 매끄럽지 못하게 저를 가이드했고, 일정 등도 제대로 모르고 출발시간과 차량을 대기시키지 못하는 등 잘못을 여러차례 해 그때마다 단호하게 꾸짖었다"고 말했다.

또 "나중에 '너무 심하게 꾸짖었다'는 자책이 들어 위로하는 뜻에서 술한잔을 사겠다고 했고 그래서 워싱턴호텔 지하1층 허름한 바에서 운전기사를 동석시켜 30분 동안 화기애애하게 이야기를 나눴다"면서 "운전기사가 앉았는데 제가 어떻게 그 여성을 성추행할수 있겠는가"라고 주장했다.

윤 전 대변인은 이어 "좋은 시간을 보내다가 나오면서 그 여자 가이드의 허리를 툭 한차례 치면서 '앞으로 잘해, 미국에서 열심히 살고 성공해'라고 말하고 나온게 전부"라면서 "돌이켜보건데 제가 미국의 문화에 대해 잘 알지도 못했다는 생각에 저는 깊이 반성하며, 그 가이드에 대해 이 자리에서도 심심한 위로의 말씀을 전해드리다"고 말했다.

윤 전 대변인은 또한 "물의를 일으킨데 대해 국민여러분과 박근혜 대통령님께 거듭 용서를 빌며, 박 대통령의 성공적인 정상회담에 누를 끼친 것에 대해 깊이 사죄드린다"고 말했다. (코리아헤럴드 송상호)

Yoon Chang-jung, the fired presidential spokesperson, on Saturday denied allegations of sexual harassment, arguing that a gesture meant to encourage his Washington-based female assistant appeared to have led to the burgeoning scandal.

During a press conference in Seoul, Yoon stressed he did not ever had any sexual intention toward the 21-year-old Korean American, who assisted him while he was accompanying President Park Geun-hye during her first visit to the U.S. since her inauguration in February.

He also said he would take legal action against media outlets producing articles on “unfounded rumors.”

“I, she and driver had some drinks together. And I touched her waist to encourage her, saying I hope she can succeed in the States,” he said. “In retrospect, I did not have a proper understanding of American culture. I am deeply regretful and express words of solace to her.”

Yoon also dismissed the rumors that he brought the woman in question over to his hotel room.

“When there were 78 reporters, Cheong Wa Dae staff all watching me, how could I ever ask her to come over to my hotel room?”

He also apologized to the people and President Park Geun-hye for causing concerns.

"I am deeply sorry that I had caused trouble to her successful trip to the U.S.," he said.

Washington police have launched an investigation after a woman filed a sexual harassment claim on Wednesday against an unidentified 56-year-old man, matching Yoon’s age. A preliminary police report alleged that the suspect “grabbed her buttocks without her permission” between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

The scandal apparently shocked the presidential office with opposition politicians criticizing Park’s personnel management and calling for her official apology to the woman and the nation.
