허스키한 음색을 지닌 남성듀오 투빅(2BiC • 지환 준형)은 요즘 아이돌 그룹으로 도배가 된 가요계에서 흔치 않은 외모를 가지고 있다. 하지만 투빅의 지환과 준형은 파워풀한 소울 음색으로 경쟁자들과는 차별화된 '무언가'를 가지고 있다.

“저희가 딱 보시기에 가수같이 안보일 수도 있다는 거 알아요. 가끔 코메디언이냐고 물어보시기까지 하시니까요” 지환이 말했다. “하지만 노래할 때만큼은 굉장히 진지하다는 거 알아주실 거라 생각해요."

대학 동기인 이 둘은 그들이 2인조 그룹으로 함께 데뷔할 거라곤 상상도 못했다고 한다. 특히나 지환은 친구들과 어울려 놀다가 우연치 않게 음악에 대한 열정과 재능을 발견했다.

“사실 어렸을 때는 노래에 관심이 없었어요. 근데 고등학교 때, 친구들과 노래방을 가서 노래를 부르는데 반응이 좋은 거에요. 그래서 그때부터 음악에 관심을 갖기 시작했죠,” 지환이 말했다.

고등학교 졸업 후, 지환은 대학에 진학했지만, 가수로써의 꿈을 이루기 위해 자퇴를 했고, 유튜브에 자신이 노래하는 동영상을 올리기 시작했다. 그의 목소리는 결국 연예인 에이전시인 넥스타 엔터테인먼트 대표의 관심을 끌게 되었다.

“1년동안 연습을 하고 보니, 듀오가 왠지 더 적합할 거라는 생각을 했어요. 그래서 주변에 아는 사람들을 물색하기 시작했고, 그렇게 준형이와 함께 작업을 하게 된 거죠,” 지환이 말했다.

두 명의 가수는 원래 그룹 이름을 자신들의 체구와 관련 지어 “2Big”으로 하려 했다. 하지만 대중들에게 어필하지 못할 거란 걱정에, “to be continued”라는 의미의 2Bic으로 바꾸기로 했다고 한다.

2인조 보컬 그룹은 2Bic이라는 이름으로 작년 3월 “또 한 여잘 울렸어”라는 싱글 앨범을 발매하여 그들만의 파워풀한 음색을 뽐냈다.

 “제목만 보면 저희들이 마치 카사노바처럼 보일 수도 있는데, 사실 노래 가사를 들어보시면 정반대의 내용이에요. 한 여자를 너무 사랑해서 다른 여잘 울려야 하는 한 남자의 가슴 아픈 사랑이야기죠.”

그 후, 투빅은 지난 달 “Back to Black”이라는 첫 정규앨범을 발매했으며 타이틀곡 “Bye Bye Love”는 나머지 수록 곡들과 마찬가지로 팝적인 느낌이 강하다.

그들은 마지막으로 “기존 한국 가수 분들과 비교했을 때, 저희는 흑인 소울 음악과 R&B 음악에 대해 더 많이 보여드리고 싶어요,” 라며 향후 음악계획을 밝혔다. (줄리 잭슨/ 코리아헤럴드)

It’s about the music, not looks

The two husky guys of 2BiC may not look like the typical hard-bodied and pretty-faced male singers one expects in today’s image-conscious music scene, but Ji-hwan and Jun-hyung have powerfully soulful voices that can blow the competition out of the water.

“I know when you look at us you think we don’t really look the part.  Many people ask if we’re comedians,” said Ji-hwan. “But when we sing, we are very sincere...and I think people can see that.”

The old college buddies did not expect to find themselves debuting together as a vocal duo. In fact, member Ji-hwan only stumbled upon his passion and musical gift after a night out with friends. 

“I actually had no interest in singing as a kid,” said Ji-hwan. “But once, when I was in high school, I went to a karaoke room with my friends and I heard a lot of positive feedback about my voice. After that, I started becoming more interested in singing and in music.”

After high school Ji-hwan went on to college but decided to leave in order to pursue a career as a singer. One of his friends helped him film and upload several YouTube videos of himself and the singer’s voice eventually grabbed the attention of the head of a local talent agency, Nextar Entertainment. 

“After practicing for a year, it was thought that singing as part of a duo would be more fitting so I decided to look among people that I knew. And that’s how Jun-hyung and I came together again,” he said.

The duo intended to name themselves 2Big, referring to the members being two large guys. However, there were concerns that the public might not take a shine to the name. So it was decided that they would be called 2BiC, meaning “to be continued.”

The duo released their first single under the name 2BiC in March last year titled “Made Yet Another Woman Cry,” showing off their powerful vocal energy and wide pitch range.

“I know the title of this song makes us kind of look like players, but that’s not what we intended,” Ji-hwan explained. “The lyrics of the song are very different. They’re saying, ‘Because of you, I can’t meet anyone else.  That’s how much I loved you and wish you would come back.’” 

2BiC then released their first full-length album, “Back to Black,” last month along with the album’s lead track “Bye Bye Love.” The track, as well as many of the songs on the album, has a very Western music essence. 

“Compared to the other Korean artists out there, we want to contribute a more American sounding, black soul style of music,” Ji-hwan said.

“We love R&B and we want to continue to introduce more of this genre in Korea,” said Jun-hyung.
