President-elect Park Geun-hye is likely to meet with Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Seoul next week, an official familiar with the issue said Sunday.
The planned meeting comes during a five-day trip to South Korea set to begin on Jan. 28 by the Myanmar’s democracy icon.
South Korea’s first female president-elect is likely to meet with Suu Kyi around Jan. 29, the official told Yonhap News Agency.
The official did not give any further details and asked not to be identified, citing policy.
Park’s family history is somewhat similar to that of Suu Kyi, who was elected to parliament last year after spending much of the past two decades under house arrest.
Suu Kyi’s father Gen. Aung San, a national independence hero, was assassinated by rivals in 1947. Park’s father, former President Park Chung-hee, was gunned down by his intelligence chief in 1979.
Suu Kyi is set to arrive in South Korea next week to attend the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics World Winter Games to be held in the eastern alpine city of PyeongChang which run from Jan. 29 to Feb. 5.
The Nobel Peace laureate is also scheduled to receive an honorary doctoral degree from Seoul National University on Feb. 1 in recognition of her contribution to promoting human rights and education. (Yonhap News)
