A U.S. solider of the 2nd Infantry Division was arrested on Wednesday on allegations of attempted rape and assault.

According to police, the soldier attempted to rape an employee of a drinking establishment in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi Province. The solider is also suspected of assaulting the owner of the establishment who tried to intervene.

The soldier, who is currently being held at the police station in the nearby city of Uijeongbu, is denying the allegations.

“The 2nd Infantry Division deeply regrets this incident,” Brig. Gen. James Burton, deputy commander of the division, said in a statement.

“We are fully engaged in a cooperative effort with the KNP (Korean National Police Agency) and local authorities to thoroughly investigate and respond to this incident.”

막 나가는 미군, 성폭행 미수에 폭력까지...

경기 동두천경찰서는 17일 술집 여종업원을 성폭행하려 하고 이를 말리는 주인을 폭행한 혐의(강간치상)로 미2사단 소속 A(26) 상병을 붙잡아 조사하고 있다.

A상병은 이날 오전 0시께 동두천시 보산동 관광특구의 한 술집에서 술에 취해 종업원 B(26•여)씨를 성폭행하려 한 혐의를 받고 있다.

또 이를 말리는 주인 C(31•여)씨를 때려서 넘어져 다치게 하는 등 폭행한 혐의도 받고 있다.

A상병은 C씨의 112신고를 받고 출동한 경찰에 의해 현장에서 붙잡혔으나 혐의를 부인하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

경찰은 한미주둔군 지휘협정(SOFA)에 의거, 피의자 조사를 마친 뒤 A상병을 의 정부경찰서 유치장에 입감하고 구속영장을 신청할 방침이다.

이날 주한미군 제2보병사단 부사단장인 J.B. 버튼 준장은 사건과 관련해 유감을 표명하는 성명을 발표했다.

그는 성명에서 "이러한 행동은 한국군과의 동맹을 지원하기 위해 공조하는 미군에게 요구되는 가치관과 전문성에 전혀 부합하지 못하는 것"이라고 밝혔다.

또 "한미주둔군 지위협정(SOFA)에 따라 대한민국 경찰에 용의자의 신병이 유지되고 미군범죄수사단의 합동수사단을 통해 철저히 조사하겠다"고 말했다.
