With the third Formula One (F1) Korean Grand Prix a month away, organizers on Thursday said they‘re ready to offer more entertaining competition and a more convenient experience for spectators and visitors.

The Korean Grand Prix, the only annual F1 stop in the country, will kick off with two practice runs on Oct. 12 in Yeongam, South Jeolla Province, about 400 kilometers south of Seoul. The second day will include the third practice session followed by the qualifying race. The final race is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Oct. 14.

It will be the 16th among 20 races in the current F1 season, and is part of the F1’s Asia swing late in the season that also covers Singapore, Japan, India and the United Arab Emirates.

Organizing officials said they have learned from the experience of having hosted two races.

“For this third event, you can all count on having more fun at the race,” the organizing committee said in a statement. “Our goal is to provide high-quality service for spectators with thorough planning and measures to improve our race operations.”

The inaugural event was so poorly managed that the chief organizer was dismissed in January 2011, three months after the race. The racing track in Yeongam was only completed two weeks prior to the first event and approved by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) just 10 days before the race.

Organizers gave away thousands of free tickets and offered a 50 percent discount on others to help fill seats. Builders couldn‘t complete construction of seating areas on time other than the grandstands, and the safety of makeshift seats came into question.

The 2011 race was regarded as a better run event. Organizers opened more facilities for fans and paved more accessible roads connecting nearby highways and the circuit’s parking lots. More accommodations were available for tourists and media compared to a year earlier.

For 2012, organizers said an additional 132 accommodations, including traditional Korean houses for bed and breakfasts, will open for the race. A Web site providing information on accommodation can be reached at http://f1lod.koreangp.kr. It‘s available in Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese.

The F1, the world’s most prestigious open-wheel racing circuit, attracts millions of fans and television viewers worldwide. This year, F1 is set to make 23 global stops. The season kicked off in Melbourne, Australia, on March 16 and has since made stops in places such as Malaysia, China, Spain, Canada, Italy, Britain and Belgium.

The Korean Grand Prix is under a seven-year deal with F1, plus a five-year option.

Fernando Alonso of Spain was the inaugural champion in South Korea, followed by Sebastien Vettel of Germany last year. Alonso is leading all drivers this season with 179 overall points, 37 better than Lewis Hamilton of Britain in second. Alonso and Hamilton have each won three races this season, Vettel, the two-time defending overall champion, is in fourth at 140 points. (Yonhap News)

올해로 3회째를 맞는 국제자동차 경주대회 포뮬러 원(F1) 코리아 그랑프리가 10월12일 연습 주행을 시작으로 13일 예선, 14일 결선 레이스 순으로 전남 영암의 코리아 인터내셔널 서킷에서 펼쳐진다.

F1은 올림픽, 월드컵 축구와 함께 세계 3대 스포츠 행사로 꼽힐 만큼 엄청난 규모를 자랑하는 행사다.

1950년 영국 실버스톤에서 처음 시작돼 올해로 62년 역사를 자랑하는 F1 그랑프리는 대회 하나에 평균 20만 명이 넘는 관중이 경기장을 찾아 연간 400만 명을 웃도는 팬들이 F1의 짜릿한 승부를 만끽하고 있다. 188개국에 TV 중계가 되고 시청자 수는 6억 명에 달한다.

‘머신’으로 불리는 경주용 차량은 대당 100억 원이 넘는 것으로 평가받고 있으며 2천400㏄ 엔진에 750마력의 출력, 최고 시속은 350㎞에 이른다.

대회 방식은 12개 팀에서 2명의 드라이버를 각 대회에 내보내 1위에 25점, 2위에 18점 순으로 랭킹 포인트를 받는다. 총 20차례 레이스의 점수를 더해 드라이버 부문과 컨스트럭터(팀) 부문 우승자를 가린다.

올해 한국 대회는 전체 20라운드 가운데 16라운드로 펼쳐지며 바로 전남 영암 코리아 인터내셔널 서킷에서 시즌 챔피언이 탄생할 가능성도 있어 더욱 주목된다.

제바스티안 페텔(독일•레드불)이 19차례 경주에서 11승을 휩쓸며 독주했던 지난 시즌과는 달리 올해는 페르난도 알론소(스페인•페라리)와 루이스 해밀턴(영국•맥라렌)이 나란히 3승으로 최다승을 기록하며 혼전 양상을 보이고 있다.

2010년 코리아 그랑프리 초대 챔피언 알론소가 179점으로 선두를 달리고 있는 가운데 해밀턴이 142점으로 그 뒤를 쫓고 있다. 컨스트럭터 부문에서는 레드불이 272점으로 1위, 맥라렌이 243점으로 2위다.

한국 팬들에게 가장 잘 알려진 ‘F1 황제’ 미하엘 슈마허(독일•메르세데스)는 랭킹 포인트 43점으로 11위에 머물고 있다.

2006년을 끝으로 은퇴했다가 2010년 현역에 복귀한 슈마허는 6월 유러피언 그랑프리에서 3위에 올라 복귀 후 처음으로 시상대에 오르기도 했으나 전성기 때의 모습은 보여주지 못하는 것이 사실이다.

9일 이탈리아 대회를 끝으로 올 시즌 유럽 대회 일정을 모두 마친 F1 그랑프리는 23일 싱가포르 대회부터 ‘아시아 시리즈’로 이어진다.

시즌 14라운드인 싱가포르 대회부터 일본(10월7일), 한국(14일), 인도(28일), 아랍에미리트(11월4일)를 돌며 올해 챔피언의 윤곽이 드러날 전망이다.

대회를 준비하는 F1 코리아 그랑프리 조직위원회도 세 번째 대회를 앞두고 준비를 철저히 하고 있다.

먼저 지난해 F1 대회 기간 임시 개통했던 목포대교, 목포-광양 고속도로, 국도 2호선 대체우회도로, 국지도 49호선, 대불산단 진입도로 등이 완전히 개통돼 목포 시내나 하구언 도로를 거치지 않고도 경주장 출입이 가능해졌다.

또 대회 기간 KTX 6편, 임시 항공기 3편, 노선버스 15대 증편과 환승 주차장 3개소 신설 등 팬들의 경기장 접근성을 높이기 위한 조처를 했고 호텔급 숙박시설과 한옥 민박, 캠핑촌 등 대체 숙박시설 132개소를 확충했다.

F1 경주장 사용 활성화와 대회 붐 조성을 위해 약 5만㎡ 부지에 총 연장 1.2㎞의 카트 경주장을 준공, 방문객에게 직접 카트를 탈 기회를 제공해 어린이를 동반한 가족 단위 관람객들의 인기를 끌 것으로 기대된다.

F1 대회 조직위원회는 “성공적인 대회 개최를 위해 모든 준비를 마쳤다. 여수 세계박람회 성공적 개최의 원동력인 우리 국민의 열정과 응원이 F1 코리아 그랑프리에도 그대로 이어지기를 바란다”며 이번 대회에 대한 팬들의 많은 관심을 당부했다.
