A 2,000-year-old wooden bridge found in Shaanxi province, home of the famous Terracotta Army, may have been the world's biggest at that time, scientists say.

Remnants of the bridge's piers were unearthed in a suburb of Xi'an, the province's capital, China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

The bridge is estimated to have been almost 1,000 feet long and 65 feet wide, Li Yufang, a researcher at the China Academy of Social Sciences, said.

The bridge may date to the Qin Dynasty of 221-206 B.C., Li said, and spanned the Wei River, the largest tributary of the Yellow River.

It probably linked two imperial palaces in the ancient capital of Xianyang, he said.

"It's the first time a wooden bridge of this size and age has been found, and it is of great value to the study of ancient bridge architecture and transportation," Li said. (UPI)

‘진시황 시절’의 다리, 세계최대 규모

중국 샨시성에서 발굴된 2,000년 된 목조 다리가 건조 당시 세계에서 가장 큰 다리였다는 주장이 제기되었다.

진시황의 유적으로 유명한 샨시성의 성도 시안 시에 있는 이 다리는 진나라 시절 건조된 것으로 길이가 304미터, 너비는 20미터에 달한다.

중국사회과학원의 연구진들은 이 다리가 중국 사상 최초로 통일 제국을 이룩한 진나라 (기원전 221~206년)에 지어진 것으로 황하의 가장 큰 지류인 위수 강을 가로질렀을 것으로 추정된다.

연구원인 리 위팡은 이 다리가 제국의 고도 (古都) 셴양의 황궁을 이었을 것이라고 말했다.

“이렇게 오래된 다리 중 이 정도 규모의 다리가 발견된 것은 처음입니다. (이번 발견은) 고대 다리 건축학과 운송을 연구하는데 있어 귀중한 가치를 지닙니다”라고 리는 말했다.
