NASA released new images from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) showing U.S. flags planted in lunar soil.

The new images have finally given proof that the flags are still standing.

Astronauts planted flags during each of the six American moon landings, starting from Apollo 11’s landing in 1969 to Apollo 17’s in 1972.

The American moon landings remain the only manned flights to touch down on a heavenly body.

According to an analysis of the shadows they cast on the surface of the moon, five of the six flags are still there. Mark Robinson, an investigator with the lunar satellite program, wrote on Friday: “From the LROC images it is now certain that the American flags are still standing and casting shadows at all of the sites, except Apollo 11.

“Astronaut Buzz Aldrin reported that the flag was blown over by the exhaust from the ascent engine during liftoff of Apollo 11, and it looks like he was correct!”

When the images were unveiled on the Internet, some users expressed diverse opinions.

“The moon landing conspiracy people will say these are fake also,” one user said.

Another user joked, “Why are all photos in space such bad quality?! My phone camera has better resolution for god’s sake.”

NASA 달 착륙 ’증거사진’ 공개


미국항공우주국(NASA)이 달 궤도 정착 위성 카메라(Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera)의 최신 사진을 공개했다.

이로써 미국의 달 탐사의 상징인 ‘달 표면에 꽂힌 성조기’의 현존 유무를 판단할 수 있게 됐다. 미국의 달 탐사는 1969년 닐 암스트롱의 아폴로 11호를 시작으로 1972년 아폴로 14호의 탐사까지 여섯 번에 걸쳐 이뤄졌다. 지금까지 인류가 천체에 직접 착륙한 기록은 미국의 유인 달 탐사가 유일하다.

미국은 여섯 번의 달 탐사에서 자국 과학 기술 성취의 상징으로 성조기를 달 표면에 꽂았다. 외신보도에 따르면 이번에 공개된 미국항공우주국의 사진을 분석한 결과 총 여섯 개의 성조기 중 다섯 개가 아직도 제자리에 건재한 것으로 확인되었다.

데일리메일은 과학자들이 이번에 공개된 최신 디테일한 사진을 보면 깃발이 아직 달의 자전 궤도에 따라 그림자를 드리우고 있는 것을 확인했다고 전했다.

남아 있지 않은 성조기는 1969년 아폴로 11호기의 탐사 때 꽂혔던 최초의 깃발로, 탐사기의 발진 압력에 날아가버렸을 것으로 추정된다.

한편 1969년 7월 20일 암스트롱이 아폴로 11호를 타고 달에 인류 최초로 발자국을 남긴 바 있으나 성조기가 바람에 흔들리고 달 표면에 분화구가 보이지 않는다는 다양한 이유로 끊임없이 음모론이 제기됐다.

이번 보도에 네티즌들은 “음모론자들은 이것도 거짓말이라고 하겠지,” “중국인들이 저 깃발을 도로 가져와서는 이베이(경매 사이트)에다가 올릴 것이다,” “왜 우주 사진은 전부 저 모양인 거냐?! 내 폰카가 훨씬 잘 나오겠다.” 등 다양한 반응을 보였다.
