Medics of Severance Hospital on Wednesday confirmed that son of Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon has a herniated disc syndrome, which justifies his being exempt from military service.
The announcement cleared 27-year-old Park Ju-sin of month-long allegations that he had fabricated medical records to dodge military service.
“Based on the magnetic resonance imaging we have conducted, we have concluded that Park Ju-sin’s fourth disc has been herniated,” said Dr. Yoon Do-heum of the hospital.
The junior Park took the filming at the hospital around 2:00 p.m. with pool reporters of the Seoul Metropolitan Government watching over.
Park Ju-sin joined the Air Force last August but was sent home four days later when he suffered extreme pain in his thighs.
After his father won the Oct. 26 mayoral by-elections, he submitted the MRI film he had taken at a local hospital to the Military Manpower Administration, which conducted a second checkup with a CT scan and confirmed the diagnosis of herniated disc. He was exempt from the military and sent to perform an alternative service at a public organization.
Park has been under media scrutiny as an independent lawmaker Kang Yong-seok disclosed an MRI film on his blog claiming it to be what Park has submitted to the MMA. The image, however, seemed to be that of an overweight person, far from Ju-sin’s figure, and fueled suspicions that Park has deliberately submitted other person’s image to dodge the draft.
But Dr. Yoon said the MRI imaging taken from his hospital and the one posted on Park’s blog are identical.
“Symptoms differ from person to person. But we are sure that both films are about the same person,” he said.
Kang on Wednesday offered to resign, taking the full responsibility about the mayhem. He has previously vowed to resign if the authenticity of the film is confirmed.
Still, he is highly likely to face backlash from Park Won-soon, who had threatened to file lawsuits against people raising conspiracy theory.
Ju-sin said he had been tormented by the media frenzy and accusations forejudging that he has conducted a fraud. Military draft dodging is perceived to be extremely serious here, where all males are subject to the conscription.
“Reporters are everywhere outside the house. I cannot go anywhere and meet anyone nor return home. My privacy has been disclosed to the public and people are even involving my girlfriend,” he appealed to the media through a SMG official.

박원순 시장 아들이 병무청에 제출한 MR I(자기공명영상진단)가 본인 것이 맞다는 검사 결과가 나왔다.
연세대 세브란스병원은 22일 기자회견을 열고 박 시장 아들 주신(27)씨가 이날 세브란스병원에서 촬영한 MRI 영상을 판독한 결과 병무청에 제출한 MRI와 같은 것이 라는 결론을 내렸다고 밝혔다.
이에 따라 강용석 의원이 박 시장 아들의 병역 비리 의혹을 제기하며 증거로 제 시한 MRI '바꿔치기' 의혹은 사실이 아닌 것으로 결론났다.
윤도흠 연세대 의대 신경외과학교실 교수는 "12월에 찍은 것과 오늘 찍은 것을 면밀히 판독했고 그 결과 동일인이라는 결론을 내렸다"고 강조했다.
그러면서 "의학적 근거를 보면 4요추 추간판 탈출 정도가 비슷하고 방향이 좌측 동일하다"며 "하요추부에서 피하지방 두께가 있는데 두께가 30mm로 동일하다는 결론 을 내렸다"고 설명했다.
이어 "동일인을 확인하기 위해 근육 모양을 봤더니 동일인으로 분류됐다"며 "척 추 뒤스크 뒤쪽에 관절 각도와 퇴행의 정도가 동일한 점 등으로 작년 12월 자생당한 방병원서 촬영한 것와 오늘 촬영한 것은 동일인으로 결론 내렸다"고 부언했다.
이날 병원에서 측정한 박 시장 아들은 키 176㎝에 몸무게 80.1kg으로 나타났다.
강 의원의 의혹 제기 이후 인터넷 등에서는 박 시장 아들이 마른 체형이라 피 하지방의 두께가 MRI 영상에 나온 것처럼 두꺼울 수가 없다는 의혹도 나왔으나 신체 검사 결과 이 역시 사실과 다른 것으로 밝혀졌다.
박 시장 아들은 지난해 8월 공군에 입대했으나 '대퇴부 말초신경 손상'을 이유 로 나흘 만에 귀가조치됐고 지난해 12월 재검을 통해 허리디스크 4급 판정을 받아 현역이 아닌 공익요원 근무를 했다.
그의 병역 의혹 논란은 4급 판정을 받을 때 제출한 MRI 필름을 강 의원이 공개 하며 확산됐고 강 의원은 "사진 속 주인공은 중증 디스크 환자"라면서 MRI '바꿔치 기' 의혹을 제기해왔다.
