President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday tapped Lee Kye-cheol, former information and communications vice minister, as chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, Cheong Wa Dae said.

Lee, 71, has held a variety of top posts at organizations specializing in communications and information such as the Korea Communications Agency and the Institute for Information Technology Advancement, the predecessor of the National IT Industry Promotion Agency. He also headed KT Corp. from 1996-2000.

Lee was picked to head the KCC after its former chairman Choi See-joong, dubbed President Lee’s political mentor, stepped down last month amid corruption allegations involving his former aide at the commission.

President Lee also named former Public Administration and Security Minister Lee Dal-gon as his senior secretary for political affairs. Lee, 58, served as a professor of the Graduate School of Public Administration at Seoul National University from 2005-2006.

Last week, the former senior secretary for political affairs Kim Hyo-jae offered to resign over allegations that he was involved in the ruling party’s high-profile vote-buying scandal.
