Players, broker arrested over volleyball match-rigging

Prosecutors arrested five former and incumbent professional volleyball players and a broker for alleged involvement in match-fixing.

They were suspected of sharing profits from betting on at least four V-League games after the players rigged the outcome, according to Daegu district prosecutors’ office Wednesday.

One of the players, identified by his surname Yeom, made mistakes intentionally during a game in February 2010 on request from the broker surnamed Kang.

All five players belonged to Suwon KEPCO45.

The team denied it had any knowledge of the scheme. It said his early retirement last July was due to injury and had nothing to do with match-fixing.

Prosecutors are now looking to see if players from other teams were also involved.

KEPCO, now fourth in the Korean Volleyball Federation league, had been eying its first-ever playoff berth.

Last year, Korea’s professional soccer league was shaken by a series of match-rigging cases. Dozens of former and active players were arrested or banned from games for life. A former footballer involved in the crime took his own life.

In the wake of the scandal, the government toughened punishment for game-rigging. Violators could now face up to seven years in jail or 70 million won ($62,600).

이젠 배구까지 … 승부조작 충격

프로축구에 이어 프로배구에서도 승부조작을 한 사건이 검찰에 처음으로 적발돼 프로배구단 KEPCO45의 현직 선수를 포함해 전ㆍ현직 선수 3명과 브로커 등이 구속됐다.

대구지검 강력부(조호경 부장검사)는 2009-2010년 프로배구 V 리그 당시 승부조작에 가담한 혐의(국민체육진흥법 위반 등)로 전ㆍ현직 배구선수 염모(30)씨 등 3명 과 브로커 강모(29)씨 등 모두 4명을 구속했다고 8일 밝혔다.

소속팀에서 '리베로' 포지션을 맡았다 지난해 은퇴한 염씨는 브로커 강씨의 부탁과 경기당 수백만원 가량의 사례금을 받고 2010년 2월 열린 경기 때 일부러 실수를 해 소속팀이 경기에서 지도록 하는 수법으로 승부조작에 가담한 혐의를 받고 있다.

조사결과 각자 다른 포지션을 맡고 있는 이들은 최소 4경기에서 번갈아가며 승부조작에 가담하거나 함께 경기를 하면서 승부를 조작한 것으로 드러났다.

승부조작을 부탁한 브로커 강씨 등은 염씨 등에게서 받은 정보를 활용해 불법 스포츠 도박사이트에 거액을 베팅한 뒤 수익금 일부를 염씨 등에게 나눠준 것으로 밝혀졌다.

검찰은 염씨 등이 "다른 선수들도 승부조작에 가담했다"는 진술을 확보해 이들이 소속됐던 팀의 다른 선수들에 대해서도 수사를 하고 있다.

또 프로축구 승부조작 사건 때처럼 염씨 등이 소속된 팀이 아닌 다른 팀에서도 승부조작 사건이 발생했을 가능성도 배제하지 않고 있다.

이와 함께 불법스포츠 도박사이트를 운영하거나 베팅 등에 관여한 브로커 등에 대해서도 수사를 계속하고 있다.

박은석 대구지검 2차장 검사는 "승부조작이 있었다는 정보를 입수해 수사를 시작했는데 2010년 프로축구에서 불거졌던 승부조작 사건보다는 프로배구 승부조작 사 건의 규모는 작을 것으로 추정하고 있다"며 "피의자들에 대한 기소가 이뤄지면 공식 적으로 발표할 계획"이라고 말했다.
